Herbal Steam - Decongestant.

I had written a post when I started this blog, called Healing Steam – Cough, Cold, & Stuffed up Noses. This is for a similar steam with different ingredient options. I decided to make a new one with just herbs. Herbal steams can be so beneficial. This steam works wonderfully for chest congestion, coughs and stuffed up noses.

decongestant herbal steam

To Make:

2 tsp each of the following herbs:

  • A large heat safe bowl

  • Boiled water

To Use:

  • Place your herbs in a heat proof bowl and pour in enough steaming water to cover the herbs.

  • With a towel over your head to create a 'tent', hover over the bowl inhaling the steam. (be sure the steam isn't so hot that it may burn your face) I like to keep my eyes closed because the peppermint can make them water.

This brews into a beautiful dark tea. The strained water (once cooled to being warm but not hot) could probably be used for extra relief by soaking a cloth in the mixture and laying it across your chest.  I'm going to try it and I'll let you all know.

What are your favorite herbal steam blends?

HAPPY HEALING <3

*Medical advice should be sought for those who suffer from asthma or allergies prior to using a herbal steam.*

Make Your Own Calendula Herbal Healing Poultice

Okay, I know I've been on a massive Calendula kick lately, I cant help it! It's just useful for so many things! Hopefully soon I will have the herbal spotlight on calendula published, and then I'll move onto another herb. <3

Calendula Poultice

We went over some of the many benefits of Calendula in these posts:

The basic greatness list of what Calendula is good for treating:

  • acne

  • eczema

  • inflammations or infections in the mouth

  • lacerations

  • burns

  • wounds

  • ulcers

  • deep cuts

  • bites

  • stings

  • damaged skin

  • frostbite

  • slow healing or infected wounds

  • bedsores

  • boils

  • wrinkles

  • sensitive skin

  • baby bum rashes

and so much more.

The idea of the poultice (alongside the other methods posted below) is to draw out an infection.

I have been using herbal poultices for most of my life. I've used them for my animals in the past as well. We used to make up herbal poultices for a patient's skin issues when I was working in Home Caring. I find them highly effective.

Now that you know a bit about the benefits of making a poultice with calendula we can move onto the how. :)

To Make The Poultice:

  • Crush a tbs or two of dried Calendula Flowers. (or you can use the strained flowers from the tea infusion / compress for this)

  • Pour hot water over them but just enough to make a paste of sorts.

To Use The Poultice:

  • Put the crushed flower paste either directly on the wound or you can put a layer of cheesecloth on the skin first.

  • Cover the mixture with a bandage / cheesecloth or a towel

  • Some people use plastic wrap to keep the warmth and moisture in, but I usually just put a few strips of medical tape on the edges of the towel or cheesecloth to hold it in place.

  • Allow to sit for a few hours (if you can)

  • Remove wrap and rinse with cool water.

  • Allow to dry.

  • Follow up with Calendula Salve (optional)

COMPRESS / Method:

To make a herbal compress with Calendula, see the post Calendula Tea for instructions. The tea compress can be used alongside this poultice and followed up with the Calendula Salve. I find it most effective to use all 3 methods together. I start out with a cool compress, allowing it to soak in for at least 20 minutes, put on the poultice and leave that on for a few hours, pat dry or allow to air dry and then apply the Calendula salve. You can also bandage over the salve if needed.

Happy Healing! <3

{Be sure to Check out the bottom of this post for a GIVEAWAY! Woo-Hoo!}

The Herbal Healing Mama Reviews

Hi Tammy! Thanks so much for joining us here!

Tell us a bit about your shop, benefits of your products or what got you started:

Believe it or not it all started one fall afternoon, money was(is) tight and I was trying to plan for Christmas gifts. I have always been creative in one way or another, so I thought I would create some gifts.  I wanted to have all natural ingredients in my items, since the people I was making the items for have known skin sensitivities.

There are a lot of "big name" products out there that claim to be all natural, a closer look at labels, and you see that's not the case.  I wanted my items to be safe, (and fun).

Lip Balms I started with lip balms, bath bombs, and solid bubble bath, then my son acquired a skin condition, so I did lots of research to tackle that, making a healing salve for him, and IT WORKED! I have since added a few different salves for different conditions, usually I will get a request from a customer with a condition, and they will ask if I can make something for it. ( i do a lot of make to order items)

I also make soaps, - all natural glycerin, re batch hand-milled, and most recently Cold Process. All of Atomic Balm Soapmy products are made with natural ingredients, like butters, oils and essential oils, (there are a few with fragrance oils ie. some novelty soaps) but I am only using skin safe ingredients .

Also you may notice that I do not have a large quantity of one item, that's because I make my products in small batches or on a pre-order basis, that's to ensure the freshness of an item or that its catered to a certain persons needs, also with out the added preservatives its always good to make fresh, -- Yes! You heard right, as of right now I do not use preservatives. I do however use natural oils/ additives to prolong the shelf life of a product.  With most of the items I make there really is no need to add preservatives, and the whole idea around natural products is to stick with all natural ingredients, and when you introduce preservatives it takes away from that whole concept, so until they come up with some sort of all natural preservative I wont be using any.

FAVES LIST:

Tell us about Atomic Balm's Top Selling Product:

Rhassoul Clay Charcoal Soap

Right now my top seller seems to be my Hand Milled Rhassoul clay with Activated charcoal with rosemary & orange Essential oil. It's a wonderful facial bar that you can use all over. It's wonderful for moisturizing your skin and pulling out all the toxins, tightening pores and clearing up blemishes.

Purchase This Here!

What's your favorite product to make? & why?

My favorite items to make, that's a tough one because I enjoy making everything, but I guess I would have to say I have a lot of fun making my bath creamers and fizzys.

Atomic Balm Bath Fizzy

I also really get a lot of enjoyment out of making a healing salve when a person has requested something, It's a great feeling to know that your helping someone with skin issues that they may have been battling with for years.

There's nothing more satisfying than getting a call or a note from a happy customer who cant believe the relief they get from trying my product, it's customers like that that become regulars.

What are your favorite products to use and why?

I have a few favorite items, I really love my healing lip butters/balms. I use them daily. {I do too Tam!}

I also really like my solid pain bars, they work really well and are all natural. I like the fact that I am not adding any extra chemicals into my body. I also use my solid lotion ( for mature skin) & I have really noticed a difference in how my skin feels and looks.

The Herbal Healing Mama's Faves:

This was a hard decision as there is so much greatness here BUT I came up with a small list with links as to where you can purchase the items. You can also message Tammy through Atomic Balm's Facebook page to put in orders for items that aren't currently listed on Storenvy.

Plus, just look at that happy packaging! How can you not feel completely pampered when you're unwrapping such loveliness before your bath?! I really loved all the sparkles and confetti floating around in the tub too! Atomic Balm's Bath Bombs are loaded with nourishing butters that leave your skin feeling like silk!

Atomic Balm Happy Bomb

  • I must praise Atomic Balm's Solid Bubble Bars! These bars are seriously amazing & intense! It filled the tub with luxurious bubbles that stayed with me during the entire length of my bath! Calendula Healing Salve - Acne Blend.

Never as a teen did I have acne issues but now as an adult, I do! How frustrating! You may remember my original post on acne- All natural Acne Relief cream. While this does help, I needed something a little stronger. I had made a universal healing ointment: Calendula Healing Salve, and tried it the other day on my face. (littered with acne, scars, and redness.) I was shocked with how fast I got results! With just one application my face was 90% clearer than it had been just hours before! WOW! I decided to take it one step further and combine the original acne recipe together with the calendula salve and came up with this one!

Calendula Healing Salve Acne Blend

What You'll Need:

To Make:

  • Melt Beeswax or Carnauba Wax first, if you're using some.

  • Add in and melt Coconut Oil and combine it with equal parts of  Calendula infused oil.

  • Remove from heat and add in the Tea Tree and Lavender oils.

  • Mix well and poor into your storage container or into your molds.

  • Pop into the fridge to allow it to solidify. (It will melt out of the fridge if you didn’t add beeswax.)

This mixture is nice and soft and melts well on the skin. I pop my solid lotion right out of the container, and use it as a lotion bar. This is easier than trying to scoop some out. (If you used molds be sure to keep the lotion bars in a airtight jar in the fridge.)

It’s best to keep your salve in the fridge, not only will it keep longer, the cool temperature will be extra soothing. Please see our post: Natural Preservatives for your Natural Products for some information regarding safety and shelf life.

Apply ointment several times a day to the affected area.

What Makes These Ingredients Beneficial?

Calendula is known for it’s anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and regrowth of new skin tissue abilities making it ideal for healing stubborn acne and scars.

Coconut oil has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties so it gives it an extra boost on healing. Not only does it help cleanse and heal acne, it also helps to resurface any scarring caused by acne.

Lavender oil is also antibacterial and acts as a soothing agent for pain and redness. Lavender oil is said to be useful in preventing future breakouts, and clearing up old acne scars.

Tea tree oil also has beneficial antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties, making it perfect for healing acne. It also reduces redness and swelling.

You can also check out our posts: Calendula Healing Salve, Acne Cream & Calendula Tea for further healing of acne.

What all natural remedies do you use to keep acne under control?

Menstrual Cramp Cream. - All Natural Relief.

If you're anything like me, menstrual cramps can be debilitating. I find it difficult to accomplish anything while being in such excruciating pain. Since I refuse to take pharmaceutical drugs, I decided I needed to do something about it. All naturally. Here's what I came up with: {UPDATED RECIPE}

Menstrual Cramp Cream DIY All Natural

What You'll Need:

Infusing your own oil with a base of Almond or Olive. With 1 tsp each of:

Because I needed the oil right away, I did a quick infusion, using heat in my melting pot. I let it steep for about a half an hour.

Allow the infusion to cool and strain out the herbs. (A strainer over a funnel works well for this.) Reserving the oil into a storage bottle. Menstrual Cramps Infused Oil HHM

Now that the Infused Oil is complete we can start making the Cream:

  • In your melting pot add 1 tsp of Beeswax or Carnauba Wax. Allow that to melt.

  • Once the two are combined, add in 4 tsp of your infused "Menstrual Cramps" oil.

  • Poor into your storage jar and refrigerate. It won't take long to harden.

TO USE:

Apply to lower back, bottom of your feet and on your stomach. You can apply a warm compress (towel) over the area for extra soothing.

Chamomile & Peppermint tea - mixed with honey is also helpful, as well as our Cayenne Salve, which also works on cramps instead of this salve. (it's also warming, which helps as well!)

<3

*Update* I ended up using the oil directly on my stomach this time around and it was wonderfully relieving. Test a small spot first to be cautious of skin reactions. I didn't have any at all, but that's not to say everyone will react the same.  --- After reading THIS is why I included thyme in this updated recipe.

Happy Healing. <3

Using a face cloth, dip it into your container and wring out.

Calendula Tea - For Treating Skin Irritations.

Calendula Tea for treating acne, eczema, inflammations or infections in the mouth, lacerations, cuts, burns, wounds, ulcers, boils and so much more. Please also see Calendula Salve - DIY All Natural Healing Cream for more ways to treat skin irritations.

Calendula Tea

To Make Calendula Tea:

You can either use a tea ball and allow the flowers to steep in a pot of boiling water, or you can strain the flowers out if you boil the mixture all together.

I find it easiest to boil the kettle and then pour water onto the Calendula Flowers. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes.

Saturate a towel in the tea and use as a compress to treat skin irritations, or use it (cooled but warm) to gargle for mouth infections or inflammations.

For Acne or Eczema: Use tea warm, soak a face towel in tea, wring it out and let sit on irritated skin for 10 minutes, twice a week. You can follow up with Calendula Salve or our Acne Cream.

For wounds, cuts, boils, infections, sunburn, burns, ulcers etc: Apply a warm compress with the tea. Soak a face or hand towel in warm tea mixture and apply to skin. You can follow up (after patted dry) with Calendula Healing Salve.

For infections or inflammations in the mouth or throat: Rinse mouth or gargle with warm Calendula Tea several times a day. You can follow up with Clove tooth pain relief for further healing of mouth irritations.

What do you use Calendula for?

Calendula Salve - DIY All Natural Healing Cream.

Calendula is such an amazing natural healer. This salve can be used for treating wounds, deep cuts, eczema, acne, bites and stings, damaged skin, burns, frostbite, slow healing or infected wounds, bedsores, boils, wrinkles, sensitive skin, baby bum rashes and SO much more.

Calendula is known for it's anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and regrowth of new skin tissue abilities.

This Calendula salve (which is much more of an ointment) can be used on it's own, massaged into skin issues, or along with a wrap, or bandage. (See here for Calendula Tea)

Calendula Salve DIY Ointment

What You'll Need:

  • Airtight Jar or Tin

  • Melting Pot

  • Stir Stick (chopsticks work well)

I didn't add beeswax to this batch as I am keeping it in the fridge so it will stay solid without a hardening wax but you can add 1 tsp of Beeswax or Carnauba wax if you like the mixture to be a little more firm.

  • Melt Coconut Oil and combine it with equal parts of  Calendula infused oil. (I used 2 tbs of each)

  • Mix well and poor into your storage container.

  • Pop into the fridge to allow it to solidify. (It will melt out of the fridge if you didn't add beeswax.) This mixture is nice and soft and melts well on the skin.

Apply ointment several times a day to the affected area.

It's best to keep your salve in the fridge in an airtight container. Not only will it keep longer, the cool temperature will be extra soothing.

If you didn't add in any beeswax or essential oils, this recipe makes for an amazing Oil Pulling Method. I also use this for an all over face neck and chest moisturizer, it's been resurfacing some of my scarring and evening out the imperfections. You can also check out our post on Calendula Tea for further healing of wounds, acne and more.

Healing Canker Sores ~ Naturally.

My son suffers from painful canker sores quite often. I have finally convinced him to avoid certain foods that may be triggering them. We'll start with one culprit at a time and see what happens. Ketchup is the first to go, the acidity in it is known to cause canker sores. He's pretty upset as he loves ketchup BUT I think the pain of the canker sores is much worse than missing out on one thing. ^_^

All natural Remedy for Canker Sores

I remember growing up having canker sores too, and MY Mama & Nana would have me rinse my mouth with some warm salt water for relief. This definitely does help, but I've found a few more options along the way that not only relieve the pain but also help speed the healing. ~Naturally.

The remedy I use on my son is simple yet very effective. I start by having him rinse his mouth with a mixture of salt and baking soda in warm water. Sometimes we take a q-tip and dab the mixture on the sores directly, so his mouth doesn't feel all dry and yucky from the salt.

  • 1tsp baking soda

  • 2 tsp salt

  • 1 cup of water

Rinse mouth thoroughly a few times a day, or dab mixture on affected area a few times a day.

Next, I have my all natural Clove Tooth Pain Relief - This mixture is very numbing and also holds anti-bacterial healing properties. This is his most favorite because it acts as almost instant relief. I dip a q-tip in the mixture and dab it on the canker sores directly. This mixture is simple to make and only requires 2 ingredients:

See link for full recipe.

We top it off with a nice Chamomile tea with honey in it, as both are supposed to help heal the sores as well. He can then rest. Tear Free. <3

All Natural Migraine Relief - Compress and Soak.

These all natural, compress and soak remedies are an extension of the original post Headache Relief Salve~ DIY All Natural Remedy. I've added some additional information on reliving migraine tension quickly. (Along with some all natural product options you can purchase and try)

[caption id="attachment_538" align="aligncenter" width="533"]Migraine Relief Compress and Soak Photo Credit: joannastar.deviantart.com[/caption]

Head Compress:

Add oils to a cup of water and mix well. dip the facecloths into the mixture and wring out. Lay one cloth across your forehead and one on the back of your neck. Then proceed to the hand or foot soak.

Hand or Foot Soak:

  • 5 drops of lavender oil

  • 5 drops of peppermint or ginger oil

  • sink or bowl full of hot water (test temperature, not too hot!)

For the foot soak I like to add in some Epsom Salts. This is really just an added bonus as they help to pull out toxins and impurities in your body. (Optional)

Soak hands in water for 2-5 minutes. You can also do this to your feet. I find the fastest way to relieve migraine pain is the bottom of your feet. (Rubbing the salve into the bottom of your feet works wonders)

Some Other All Natural Options:

Ginseng is also an active headache reliever.

Wood Betony - The leaves prepared as a tea which is useful for headaches and mild nervine. Mountain Rose Herbs also offers seeds to plant your own.

Increasing Garlic intake is also known to reduce frequent headaches.

Please also see the Headache Relief Salve post for additional headache relief. This is by far my favorite salve.

What do you use to relieve headache tension?

Headache Relief Salve~ DIY All Natural Remedy.

This headache relief salve is a light, aromatic mix of peppermint and lavender oils. I can  honestly say that this is the most used salve I make in my home. Everyone benefits from it. It works wonders for tension headaches, head colds, migraines and more.

Peppermint is known to relax muscles and spasms, making it ideal for releasing headache tension. Peppermint helps relieve pain and the added benefits of soothing Lavender magnifies the healing properties. Lavender acts as a mild anti-spasmodic, alleviating inflamed blood vessels causing the head pain.

The aroma is magnificent. I find this blend helpful as an aromatherapy "inhaler" also. It's light scent is relaxing, good for relieving stress, nervousness and even depression.

I've included an extension to this post. Please see migraine compress and soak for extra relief.

Headache Relief Cream

What You'll Need:

Recipe 1 (Solid Salve):

This one can be kept out of the fridge without melting. For a softer base, see Recipe 2.

Depending on your preferences, you can add a few more drops of each essential oil.

Recipe 2 (Softer Base & Simplest Recipe):

This one will liquify to an oil out of the fridge but solidify when kept cool. It will melt easily when introduced to your skin.

In my first batch I used peppermint oil I had made from Infusing my own oil. If you're going to infuse your own oil, you can use it as your base oil and leave out the coconut oil. See recipe below if you want to use your own infused oil.

Recipe 3 - if you're infusing your own oil:

*These are basic measurements. Depending on the size of container you are using to store your finished product will depend how much you need. (In tbs amounts, use 1 tbs of beeswax to 6 tbs of carrier oil)

Preparation Items You Will Need:

  • Melting Pot / Double Boiler or a pan on the stove (low heat)

  • Mixing Stick (I use a chopstick)

  • Storage Jar(s)

Preparation for Recipe 1:

  • Melt your Beeswax or Carnauba Wax first.

  • Stir in coconut oil and allow for that to melt. (low heat)

  • Reduce Heat & add in your Essential Oils. Stir well until everything is combined.

  • Remove from heat and pour into your storage container immediately. (It doesn't take long for this to harden)

Preparation for Recipe 2:

  • Melt coconut oil in your pot  (low heat)

  • Reduce Heat (or remove from heat) & add in your Essential Oils. Stir well until everything is evenly combined.

  • Remove from heat and pour into your storage container immediately. (It doesn't take long for this to harden)

Preparation for Recipe 3:

  • Melt your Beeswax or Carnauba Wax first.

  • Next, add in Infused Oil and stir ingredients together until everything is combined uniformly.

  • Reduce Heat & add in your Essential Oils.

  • Remove from heat and pour into your storage container immediately. (It doesn't take long for this to harden)

Depending on the firmness you prefer, you can add more beeswax or add more carrier oil to make a softer base. I like mine to be soft, plus I keep it in the fridge so it stays hard, but melts easily on the skin.

If you aren't happy with your finished salve, you can always melt it back down and add in more of what you need.

It's best to keep your mixture in the fridge. (At it's best if used within 3 - 6 months)

Apply to temples, base of neck, (right under hairline) the pain site (across forehead) and bottom of the feet.

*You can also use these oils in a migraine compress & hand soak.

Make your own ~ Herbal Bath Blend. Calming Lavender Rose.

Aromatherapy for a Natural Mama who needs a little relaxation in her life.  <3

Therapeutic Aromatherapy for relaxation, meditation, stress relief, easing anxiety, & releasing depression. This blend also helps restore balance to mind & body and brings about love & peace.

Perfect for a stressed out Mama or one who just deserves a little peaceful pampering time.

( This blend is also great for Enhancing love & sensuality ;) )

Lavender rose anxiety relief

 What You'll Need:

In an airtight jar -

With the oils, I find it's best to shake the mixture in between to get them distributed evenly and to see desired strength of scent.

OPTIONAL:

  • Coconut essential / scented Oil 2-5 drops

  • Vanilla Extract - 1tsp

  • 'Tea Bag' of sorts. I find this easier, rather than having to clean up the tub if you just pour the mix right into your bath - that is completely up to you though. <3 Maybe a drain screen would come in handy here. If you do choose to use a tea bag, this can be a little organza bag, or a piece of fabric with a tie, whatever your heart desires. I'd love to hear some creative ways you guys make these.

To Make:

  • You can either use a mixing bowl and add to your storage jar after or you can start right on your storage jar.

  • Poor in 1 cup of salts

  • Add in your desired amounts of oils, shake well to be sure they are distributed evenly.

  • crunch or tear your rose petals and add them in, along with the lavender buds. I usually use a tsb or 2 of each.

  • Shake the jar again until the mixture is consistent.

If the mixture ends up being too strong for your taste, just add in more salt. I find the scent goes a long way. I've dulled my blends down lots of time for individual baths. You can keep your mixture in the jar, and when you want to have a bath pour some plain salts into your bath baggie and add in some of your mixture.

To Use:

Add a few spoonfuls into your 'tea bag' and toss the whole bag into the tub and enjoy. (or scoop a few spoonfuls straight into the bath)

HAPPY BATHING! <3

I have also found this blend useful as an aromatherapy smelling salt. I keep some in a glass Aromatherapy Saltsvile and take a sniff anytime I need a bit of calming energy to wash over me. ^_^ <3

I actually will be selling these from my shop for a little while longer.

Here is the listing for the Aromatherapy Herb Jar Necklace

Here is the listing for the pre-made Bath Blend. 8oz and Also in 2oz size here.

Cayenne & Clove DIY all Natural Pain Relief Salve hhm

Cayenne is known to numb out nerve endings, dramatically decreasing pain.
The source of the heat is capsaicin, the fiery phenolic resin found in most hot peppers. Capsaicin causes nerve endings to release a chemical known as substance P. Substance P transmits pain signals from the body back to the brain.

When capsaicin causes substance P to flood out of the cells, you experience a sensation of warmth or even extreme heat. When the nerve endings have lost all of their substance P, no pain signals can be transmitted to the brain until the nerve endings accumulate more substance P. - Learn more HERE

Clove is amazing for so many healing purposes. You can learn more about it over at Experience-Essential-Oils.com

These antibacterial and anti-inflammatory ingredients work well together to numb nagging pain.

What You'll Need:

Note: Test your done batch for strength. You can always re-melt and add in an extra spoonful of Cayenne Oil if this batch isn't strong enough. OR you can add more Beeswax & Coconut Oil to dilute further if it's too strong. (Beeswax is what solidifies the mixture so adding too much will make it too hard to scoop out)

Preparation:

  • Melt your beeswax first.

  • Stir in coconut oil and allow for that to melt. (low heat)

  • Next, add in Cayenne Oil and stir ingredients together until everything is combined uniformly. *The steam can be spicy so please be careful!*

  • Reduce Heat & add in your 10 drops of Clove Oil. This is optional but it helps boost the pain fighting as well as gives it a sweeter scent.

  • Remove from heat and pour into your storage container immediately. (It doesn't take long for this to harden)

Cayenne & Clove ~ Aches & Pain Relief Healing Salve. DIY all natural

It's best to keep your mixture in the fridge. (At it's best if used within 6 months)

To Use:

Rub salve on painful areas and allow to soak in. The area will warm and sooth. (Best not to use on open cuts as it may sting or burn - Although, in an emergency supposedly putting Cayenne powder on a severe cut will stop the bleeding)

Wash hands IMMEDIATELY after use. Keep well away from mouth and eyes.

*A little tidbit of poor decision making on my part, I wanted to test the strength of my salve once so I licked my finger. I really don't recommend doing that. My mouth was on fire! ^_^

If You're Making Your Oil You Will Need:

Follow directions to make your own oil on our post How to Infuse Your Own Oils.

This mixture is also useful for healing bunions! Apply a generous amount on affected area and cover with a bandage. You will have to repeat this several times before you notice a difference. If any irritation occurs, discontinue use.

*Important Note* - Wash hands well after use. Avoid getting product in mouth or eyes (It will burn because of the cayenne - rinse thoroughly if accidental contact occurs.)

Cayenne could possibly stain clothing so be watchful for that.

  • Combine dry ingredients in a mixing bowl.

  • Melt together Shea butter & Coconut oil,

  • Add in vitamin e, grape seed & honey to the melting pot (& eucalyptus oil if you aren't using the leaves) stir together well.

  • Spoon your ready mixture into your storage jars & it's ready to be enjoyed!

  • Take into the shower with you, applying to already wet skin works much easier. Gently massage into skin in circular motions.

Bug Bite Itch Relief ~ Calamine Alternative

This is a simple recipe to quickly relieve the itchiness of big bites. {It looks gross, but it works!}

What You'll Need 20140620-092444-33884816.jpg

Basil has anti-inflammatory properties that will reduce swelling while peppermint is soothing and cooling to the skin. Tea tree is antiseptic and will prevent the bite from getting infected as well as help with the healing process.

Aloe always works wonders as well.

Directions

  • Crush your herbs into a fine powder using your mortar and pestle or coffee grinder.

  • Mix dry ingredients together first. (Herbs, Salt, Clay or Baking Soda.)

  • Add in your peppermint and tea tree oils

  • Mix together well (I use a chop stick for this)

It should now look like this:

Slowly and carefully add a few drops of water or witch hazel, mixing constantly until the mixture forms a thick paste.
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for extra soothing / cooling effects.

DIY - All Natural {Heavy Duty} Bug Repellent Spray!

With Summer fast approaching, the bugs are swarming in! Especially where we are, by the lake. I definitely love summer, but could do without all the bug bites. I love some of the unique ideas online such as Wellness Mama's Solid Bug-Off Lotion Bars.

There are many different ways to make all natural bug repellent but I really like using some herbs rather than just oils alone. I feel that too much oil base would probably stain clothes, so I guess if you wanted to make an oil mix it would be best as just a skin lotion or even to make the lotion bars above. SO - I will make a list below of the herbs or oils that are effective at keeping bugs away and you can decide which of what you want to use. ( You may already have lots of them in your kitchen)

Play around with different scents, or throw a little of everything in. (that's what I did, using about 2 tsp of each herb, and decided to use Peppermint, Tea Tree and Citronella oil)

Once you decide which herbs you are going to use, follow the directions below.

DIRECTIONS

  • Combine all of your herbal ingredients (excluding the essential oils until later) into a pan (or preferably a crock pot) full of water and let simmer for a few hours. Stirring occasionally.

IMG_4274vThis will reduce in volume. Let it simmer until you have a nice dark base.

  • Once you have the consistency you like, remove from heat and allow to cool for a few hours. (check on temperature)

  • Strain out the herbs using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, keeping the liquid. ( I put a funnel in the top of a mason jar and rested a strainer lined in cheesecloth on the top of the funnel, using a ladle to scoop the mixture into the jar. )

  • Add in your Peppermint, Tea Tree, Citronella and any other oils you will be using from the list.

  • Stir together well, and now you can either use the mixture alone to add to spray bottles or you can dilute into spray bottles with some water. (test the consistency for any skin irritations)

There you have it, All Natural Bug Repellent Spray!

Feel free to print out and use the labels I designed using PicMonkey. (for your own personal use, not for commercial use please)

*Shake well before use & avoid contact with eyes and mouth. I sprayed this all over before taking a walk to the beach this evening and not one single bug stopped to "say hello". ;)

They also offer an all natural Bug Out Repellent from Way Out Wax. It's Hemp Citronella. (if you don't feel like making your own.)
