Cheap & Easy - DIY "Poop Spray" - All Natural.

That's right! I call it Poop Spray!

This quick and simple recipe for deodorizing bathroom spray is very effective & much safer than spraying around all those chemicals! :)

All Natural DIY Bathroom Spray

What You'll Need:

  • Spray Bottle (I used a 120 ml)

  • Distilled Water - Warmed

  • Baking Soda (½ a tsp) (this is optional but helps to deodorize the air)

  • 20-40 drops of your favourite Essential Oils

The Oil blend I used included Tea Tree Oil as it helps kill bacteria. I also mixed Peppermint & Wild Orange into this one. (Usually I use Tea Tree & Lavender with a little Vanilla. Mmm)

To Make:

Warm the water so the baking soda has an easier time dissolving into it. Then add in your Essential Oil mix. Cap & Shake. I know water & oil doesn't mix BUT I use this all the time & have never had a problem. Just shake it each time you use it.

Where to buy Essential Oils

American / WW Friends: I recommend Mountain Rose Herbs or Starwest Botanicals (Some oils can be shipped elsewhere BUT my Canadian friends are having some issues here)

Canadian Friends: Amazon.ca or Pure Essential Oils

You can purchase Spray Bottles HERE

What's your favorite essential oil blend? Share with me in the comments below!

Herbal Cough & Cold Syrup - Immune Boosting - DIY

Cold & Flu season is upon us. Boo! :( There is nothing that slows you down faster than continuous coughing, sneezing, sleepiness, constant nose blowing and not being able to breathe when you do try to sleep. Makes me miserable!

It's a very rare occasion that I get ill nowadays BUT I was struck just over 2 weeks ago AND it's still not gone. I've finally had enough and decided to do something about it. (Working on a recipe for some cough drops also.) I don't know about you but when I'm ill, I don't feel like doing anything let alone concocting a new recipe... but like I said - I had had enough!!

When I first started this blog, one of my first posts was a Herbal Healing Tea – Herbal Tincture – for sinus and chest infections, sore throats & coughs. While I need to update the photos because the post looks a little sad, the recipe does work very well and tastes delicious too. Here is my new and improved cough and cold remedy, in syrup form.

What You'll Need:

photo 5

Tools:

  • measuring spoons

  • pan on the stove

  • stir spoon

  • organza bag / tea ball or strainer

  • funnel

  • bottle or jar to keep mixture in.

To Make:

First, you'll need to make a strong "tea" with your herbs and water. I put mine in an organza bag so I didn't have to strain them afterwards. Place your herbs in your water and allow to simmer together for about 30 minutes on LOW heat.

photo 1

Once you have a nice dark blend, strain herbs from the liquid & compost (reserve the liquid)

IMG_6367s

Pour in honey and measure out some coconut oil. Continue to heat until everything is combined. Stirring constantly.

This is where you can decide the consistency. If you allow it to boil for a while, it will thicken up. You can also add in more honey for a thicker syrup. Don't allow it to get too hot though, or it will solidify later.

IMG_6366d

Once everything is combined, remove from heat and add in oils and tincture.

IMG_6382a

Allow to cool and then funnel into your bottle or jar.

DOSAGE:

1 TBSP ADULTS

1 TSP CHILDREN

(treat this like you would any other cough syrup, taking a dose when needed BUT leaving lots of space in between.)

You could also mix a spoonful into a cup of tea and drink it that way. (Green, Chai or Chamomile would be best)

Keep fresh in the fridge for a month or so.

 Why These Ingredients?

Honey →

Honey helps to coat the throat. It has many beneficial properties helping it to speed recovery. It helps to calm & stop coughing, especially at nighttime and helps to improve sleep. (Coughing isn't all bad, it's a good way to clear mucus BUT I don't like being up all night coughing.)

Thyme →

Thyme has antiseptic qualities that makes it helpful for treating respiratory ailments or infections.  It helps suppress coughs, rid the body of mucus, strengthens the lungs to fight off infection, and acts as a shield against bacteria.

Cinnamon →

Cinnamon is great for helping clear up congestion and cough. It boost the immune system and helps regulate circulation.

Ground Ginger →

Ginger has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that helps kill bacteria and reduce any inflammation or swelling in the sinuses or the bronchial tubes. It helps soothe sore throats, eases congestion, coughing and helps clear up seasonal colds. Ginger helps to increase circulation and boosts the immune system.

Chamomile →

Chamomile is great for soothing sore throats and coughs.

Peppermint →

Peppermint acts as a decongestant, helping to ease labored breathing & clearing out mucus. It helps to soothe sinus issues, headaches & allergies.

Sage →

Sage has antiseptic qualities making it wonderful in helping fight infections.

Lemon Juice →

Lemon helps rid the respiratory system of bacteria and mucus.

Echinacea Tincture →

Echinacea is widely used to fight cold symptoms, upper respiratory infections & sore throats. Herbalists consider Echinacea to be a natural antibiotic.
Echinacea is used for healthy immune system support as well as to support healthy sinus function during times of need. It has also been shown to support healthy respiratory function. - Mountain Rose Herbs

Oregano Oil →
Oil of oregano has many beneficial properties, including:  antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial, antiseptic, antispasmodic, & fungicidal. Studies have shown that oil of oregano is effective at killing harmful bacteria, and also helps boost the immune system fighting viruses, fungi and parasites.

Coconut Oil →

Coconut oil can be helpful shortening the duration of a cold. It helps to soothe sore throats, and also eases coughing. It helps to boost the immune system.

Do you have any herbal remedies you use at home for cold relief?

SOME IMPORTANT NOTES:

Please remember, information found on this blog should not be used to replace that of your professional medical practitioner. Please see my Disclaimer.

Never give honey to a child younger than age 1. - there is a risk of infant botulism, a rare but serious form of food poisoning.

Women who are pregnant should not drink thyme tea, although small amounts of thyme used in cooking do not cause side effects. Do not take thyme as a medicine if you have a duodenal ulcer or if you have thyroid disease. - MRH

I recommend Mountain Rose Herbs & Starwest Botanicals for all of your herbal healing needs!

You can purchase any extra supplies over at Amazon.ca. (As well as any oils for my Canadian friends while I'm seeking out a Canadian supplier.)

TSU Social Network | Get Paid To Post!

An invite only social media platform where you can earn revenue by sharing your original content! How great is that?

Other social sites that we spend hours on everyday collect the revenue that may be created from our original content, and get rich for themselves,  -  Tsu gives 90% of the revenue collected to THE CONTENT CREATOR! - How it should be!

On Tsu - share pictures, blog posts, statuses about your day-to-day life, create an ad, collect revenue! (it's a similar platform to Facebook but with added benefits. - I've seen some people calling it "The Anti-Facebook"! ^_^ )

Launched only in October, the site is gaining momentum quite quickly!

[caption id="attachment_1536" align="aligncenter" width="640"]My Invite Only Link to the site! I hope to see you there! My Invite Only Link to the site! I hope to see you there![/caption]

Some FAQ about Tsu:
tsū shares social revenues that come from third-party ads, sponsorships and partnerships. Once economics are created, tsū receives 10% to maintain the platform. Half of the remaining earned revenue is paid to the user who created the content. The other half of the remaining earned revenue is distributed to the user’s network Family Tree. Users on tsū monetize their content and network in perpetuity, which continues to grow alongside the community.

Your family tree are the people who join through your invite only link. Revenue is shared throughout your family tree.
Tsū’s algorithm automatically tracks, measures, and distributes revenue to the appropriate user and their Family Tree. At a high level, 90% of revenues are distributed to users. To maintain the platform, tsū receives 10%. To see how this breaks down, let’s take a look at 4 users, all with varying start dates on tsū:

User A invites user B, who invites user C, who invites user D

Part 1
- $100 of earned revenue is generated based on the content user D shared (photos, videos, status updates, etc.)

Part 2
- 90% of earned revenue go to the users. In this case, $90 of the $100 is shared with all the users.
- tsū takes 10% of the $100 for platform fees. In this case $10.

Part 3
- User D, the original content creator takes 50% of the $90. In this case, $45.
- User C gets 33.3% (1/3) of the original $90 generated. In this case, $29.70
- User B gets 11.1% (1/3 of 1/3 = 1/9) of the original $90 generated. In this case $9.99
- User A gets 3.70% (1/3 of 1/3 of 1/3 = 1/27) of the original $90 generated. In this case $3.33
- This is what we call the rule of infinite thirds

I would LOVE for you to come and join me on Tsu! I hope to see you there! What have you got to lose?! <3

Here is my official invite to YOU! Join me on tsu!! - https://www.tsu.co/TheHerbalHealingMama

DOES YOUR FAMILY NEED A TECH TIMEOUT? $100 Sweepstakes!

WHAT IS TECH TIMEOUT?

The Tech TimeoutTM challenge started by ForestersTM encourages families to take a daily break from technology. Participating families are encouraged to disconnect from all things electronic with the goal of helping spouses, parents and children build stronger bonds, communicate more personally and get more involved in each other’s lives.

I think this is a wonderfully motivational challenge that my family will definitely be participating in! I hope yours will too! I try to do this a few times a day. My son is 9 and a 'big time techy' which, don't get me wrong.. Much of it is very useful and productive but I think it's so important to take time together, chatting about the day, going for a walk, making snacks together etc.

Foresters Tech is hosting this sweepstakes to encourage families to spend more personal time together and are offering up a $100 gift card to Amazon! Open to US & Canada (read the full terms on the contest page)
As champions of family well-being, ForestersTM is hosting a contest to encourage families to spend less time plugged in and more time tuned into each other.

Join the movement by pinning your family's favorite tech-free activity to the Foresters Tech Timeout "Family Activity Time" pin board and you'll be entered for a chance to win a $100 Amazon gift card.

How simple & fun for such a great opportunity from a wonderful movement!

Natural Hair Serum - For Strength, Length and Body.

This all natural / herbal hair serum / mask is packed full of beneficial ingredients to promote hair growth, thicken and strengthen your locks as well as heal any scalp or dry/ damage issues.

I've been meaning to put up some posts on hair care for a while, but seeing as most of my hair is in dreadlocks, it's hard for me to test these products before posting. What I've done is unlocked more of my bangs so I can truly test out this wonderfully nourishing recipe, before sharing it here with you.

(I will also post some hair treatments for dreadlocks soon as well - if that's of interest to anyone?)

I've included a list at the bottom of this post as to which ingredients contain what benefits.

DIY - All Natural - Hair Serum -

**The following ingredient amounts are for a 550 ml container. You can cut amounts in half for smaller container. **

What You'll Need:

tools:

  • Melting pot / pan on stove or double boiler

  • Big Mixing Bowl (I actually used a big metal bowl on the stove for melting and mixing)

  • Measuring Cup / Stir Stick or Spoon,

  • Stand or Hand Mixer (If you don't have one, these are pretty nice and affordable

  • Airtight Container for storage. (MRH has some options)

To Make:

In your pot, melt coconut oil first, on LOW heat.

Add in all other ingredients except essential oils. Stirring well.

Once everything is combined remove from heat, allow to cool down and then add in your essential oil. Stir again & then put the mixture in the fridge until it solidifies. (Mine took about 3 hours.)

Once your mixture has solidified, start whipping it with your hand mixer or stand mixer until it's nice, light and frothy.

That's It! - Scoop it into your container(s) & enjoy!

DIY HAIR TREATMENT

To Use:

Dampen hair with warm water, gently massage into scalp first and pull through to the ends of your hair. You can wrap your head in a towel and leave on for at least 20 or more minutes and then wash normally.

Ingredient Info:

→Why Vitamin e oil?

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps repair and build tissue. When you apply vitamin E to your scalp, it helps reduce inflammation and repair damage to the follicles, and healthy follicles encourage hair growth. - Livestrong.com

→Why Jojoba oil?

Jojoba oil is great for root follicles allowing oxygen in and thereby encouraging new growth. It also makes a great scalp cleanser for the hair, and is equally wonderful for the skin because it has absorption properties that are similar to our skins own sebum. - Mountain Rose Herbs

→Why Rosemary? -

Rosemary is known to promote hair growth & strength. It's an excellent treatment for dry / damaged hair. (Just use sparingly if you're blond, as directly it can darken the hair colour.)

→Why Lavender Oil? -

Lavender is naturally stimulating to the hair follicles. It's naturally healing for severe conditions of hair loss as well as alopecia. It works wonderfully to strengthen hair and prevents hair loss as well.

→Why Peppermint Oil?

Peppermint naturally stimulates the hair follicles and increases circulation to encourage new hair growth.  Peppermint also helps regulate oil production, providing hydration and adds a bit of shine to your hair while taming frizz. (It can tingle so only a very little bit is needed)

→Why Tea Tree Oil?

Tea Tree oil is an all around useful oil when it comes to treating hair. It antifungal properties treat any scalp condition. It prevents hair loss, heals split ends, promotes hair growth, and helps to unclog follicles.

→Why Aloe Vera Gel?

Aloe soothes your scalp and regenerates the hair cells, it is known to stop hair loss and help your hair grow thicker and more healthy.

→Why Coconut oil?

Coconut oil is naturally conditioning and nourishing to our hair. It's amazing at repairing damage, locking in moisture and sealing split ends. It improves blood circulation, hair cuticles and scalp health making it very beneficial for helping thicken up your hair. Coconut oil is high in vitamins and fatty acids, helping to protect the strands from breakage while strengthening your locks in the long run.

The natural antioxidants and nutrients found in coconut oil will deliver critical resources to improve your hair's softness and luster. Coconut oil is rich in vitamin E, vitamin K and iron and effectively eliminates dandruff while boosting hair growth. - newhealthguide.org

→Why Vegetable glycerin?

Glycerin is the type of chemical compound that’s able to attract moisture from the air.

The potential problem with glycerin is that it can have a drying effect on hair if the atmosphere is too dry/cold. Glycerin will draw water into your hair from the air if it’s humid enough. However, it will draw water out of your hair if there’s little to moisture in the air. That can cause or worsen dryness issues if you’re not careful.

Still, glycerin is great for improving natural hair’s moisture content and elasticity which helps prevent breakage, especially while detangling or manipulating it when wet.

Some excerpts from- Pros & Cons of Glycerin for Natural Hair Care Products

→Why Honey?

Honey is a natural humectant, meaning it attracts and holds moisture, it’s full of beneficial antioxidants and nutrients helping to heal dry or damaged hair, to stimulate hair follicles, & to encourage new hair growth. It naturally adds shine and softens hair.

→Why Argan Oil?

Argan delivers deep hydration, helping to strengthen dry or brittle hair.

Argan oil is proven to make hair softer, silkier and shinier. It is the ideal hair conditioner, and it can even help to treat split ends and tame frizzy hair. - Argan Oil World

If you truly want natural, healthy and strong hair you should be focused on 'no poo' treatments only. Chemicals in regular shampoo strip our hair of the natural oils it needs to grow healthily. Washing with a baking soda mix is amazing for getting rid of build up and regulating pH balance. Be cautious of this though, I read an interesting article outlining the fact that it does not dilute easily. (Causing the alkaline state to be much higher than necessary - Looking into this.) Rinsing with Apple Cider Vinegar is just as beneficial for shiny, strong and healthy hair. (My sister is working on a post for us right now about no poo hair treatments) - As with all new routines, your hair may look a little different until your body gets used to 'no poo' but you (& your hair) will thank you in the long run.
