Herbal Cough & Cold Syrup - Immune Boosting - DIY

Cold & Flu season is upon us. Boo! :( There is nothing that slows you down faster than continuous coughing, sneezing, sleepiness, constant nose blowing and not being able to breathe when you do try to sleep. Makes me miserable!

It's a very rare occasion that I get ill nowadays BUT I was struck just over 2 weeks ago AND it's still not gone. I've finally had enough and decided to do something about it. (Working on a recipe for some cough drops also.) I don't know about you but when I'm ill, I don't feel like doing anything let alone concocting a new recipe... but like I said - I had had enough!!

When I first started this blog, one of my first posts was a Herbal Healing Tea – Herbal Tincture – for sinus and chest infections, sore throats & coughs. While I need to update the photos because the post looks a little sad, the recipe does work very well and tastes delicious too. Here is my new and improved cough and cold remedy, in syrup form.

What You'll Need:

photo 5

Tools:

  • measuring spoons

  • pan on the stove

  • stir spoon

  • organza bag / tea ball or strainer

  • funnel

  • bottle or jar to keep mixture in.

To Make:

First, you'll need to make a strong "tea" with your herbs and water. I put mine in an organza bag so I didn't have to strain them afterwards. Place your herbs in your water and allow to simmer together for about 30 minutes on LOW heat.

photo 1

Once you have a nice dark blend, strain herbs from the liquid & compost (reserve the liquid)

IMG_6367s

Pour in honey and measure out some coconut oil. Continue to heat until everything is combined. Stirring constantly.

This is where you can decide the consistency. If you allow it to boil for a while, it will thicken up. You can also add in more honey for a thicker syrup. Don't allow it to get too hot though, or it will solidify later.

IMG_6366d

Once everything is combined, remove from heat and add in oils and tincture.

IMG_6382a

Allow to cool and then funnel into your bottle or jar.

DOSAGE:

1 TBSP ADULTS

1 TSP CHILDREN

(treat this like you would any other cough syrup, taking a dose when needed BUT leaving lots of space in between.)

You could also mix a spoonful into a cup of tea and drink it that way. (Green, Chai or Chamomile would be best)

Keep fresh in the fridge for a month or so.

 Why These Ingredients?

Honey →

Honey helps to coat the throat. It has many beneficial properties helping it to speed recovery. It helps to calm & stop coughing, especially at nighttime and helps to improve sleep. (Coughing isn't all bad, it's a good way to clear mucus BUT I don't like being up all night coughing.)

Thyme →

Thyme has antiseptic qualities that makes it helpful for treating respiratory ailments or infections.  It helps suppress coughs, rid the body of mucus, strengthens the lungs to fight off infection, and acts as a shield against bacteria.

Cinnamon →

Cinnamon is great for helping clear up congestion and cough. It boost the immune system and helps regulate circulation.

Ground Ginger →

Ginger has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that helps kill bacteria and reduce any inflammation or swelling in the sinuses or the bronchial tubes. It helps soothe sore throats, eases congestion, coughing and helps clear up seasonal colds. Ginger helps to increase circulation and boosts the immune system.

Chamomile →

Chamomile is great for soothing sore throats and coughs.

Peppermint →

Peppermint acts as a decongestant, helping to ease labored breathing & clearing out mucus. It helps to soothe sinus issues, headaches & allergies.

Sage →

Sage has antiseptic qualities making it wonderful in helping fight infections.

Lemon Juice →

Lemon helps rid the respiratory system of bacteria and mucus.

Echinacea Tincture →

Echinacea is widely used to fight cold symptoms, upper respiratory infections & sore throats. Herbalists consider Echinacea to be a natural antibiotic.
Echinacea is used for healthy immune system support as well as to support healthy sinus function during times of need. It has also been shown to support healthy respiratory function. - Mountain Rose Herbs

Oregano Oil →
Oil of oregano has many beneficial properties, including:  antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial, antiseptic, antispasmodic, & fungicidal. Studies have shown that oil of oregano is effective at killing harmful bacteria, and also helps boost the immune system fighting viruses, fungi and parasites.

Coconut Oil →

Do you have any herbal remedies you use at home for cold relief?

Natural Hair Serum - For Strength, Length and Body.

This all natural / herbal hair serum / mask is packed full of beneficial ingredients to promote hair growth, thicken and strengthen your locks as well as heal any scalp or dry/ damage issues.

I've been meaning to put up some posts on hair care for a while, but seeing as most of my hair is in dreadlocks, it's hard for me to test these products before posting. What I've done is unlocked more of my bangs so I can truly test out this wonderfully nourishing recipe, before sharing it here with you.

(I will also post some hair treatments for dreadlocks soon as well - if that's of interest to anyone?)

I've included a list at the bottom of this post as to which ingredients contain what benefits.

DIY - All Natural - Hair Serum -

**The following ingredient amounts are for a 550 ml container. You can cut amounts in half for smaller container. **

What You'll Need:

tools:

  • Melting pot / pan on stove or double boiler

  • Big Mixing Bowl (I actually used a big metal bowl on the stove for melting and mixing)

  • Measuring Cup / Stir Stick or Spoon,

  • Stand or Hand Mixer (If you don't have one, these are pretty nice and affordable

  • Airtight Container for storage. (MRH has some options)

To Make:

In your pot, melt coconut oil first, on LOW heat.

Add in all other ingredients except essential oils. Stirring well.

Once everything is combined remove from heat, allow to cool down and then add in your essential oil. Stir again & then put the mixture in the fridge until it solidifies. (Mine took about 3 hours.)

Once your mixture has solidified, start whipping it with your hand mixer or stand mixer until it's nice, light and frothy.

That's It! - Scoop it into your container(s) & enjoy!

DIY HAIR TREATMENT

To Use:

Dampen hair with warm water, gently massage into scalp first and pull through to the ends of your hair. You can wrap your head in a towel and leave on for at least 20 or more minutes and then wash normally.

Ingredient Info:

→Why Vitamin e oil?

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps repair and build tissue. When you apply vitamin E to your scalp, it helps reduce inflammation and repair damage to the follicles, and healthy follicles encourage hair growth. - Livestrong.com

→Why Jojoba oil?

Jojoba oil is great for root follicles allowing oxygen in and thereby encouraging new growth. It also makes a great scalp cleanser for the hair, and is equally wonderful for the skin because it has absorption properties that are similar to our skins own sebum. - Mountain Rose Herbs

→Why Rosemary? -

Rosemary is known to promote hair growth & strength. It's an excellent treatment for dry / damaged hair. (Just use sparingly if you're blond, as directly it can darken the hair colour.)

→Why Lavender Oil? -

Lavender is naturally stimulating to the hair follicles. It's naturally healing for severe conditions of hair loss as well as alopecia. It works wonderfully to strengthen hair and prevents hair loss as well.

→Why Peppermint Oil?

Peppermint naturally stimulates the hair follicles and increases circulation to encourage new hair growth.  Peppermint also helps regulate oil production, providing hydration and adds a bit of shine to your hair while taming frizz. (It can tingle so only a very little bit is needed)

→Why Tea Tree Oil?

Tea Tree oil is an all around useful oil when it comes to treating hair. It antifungal properties treat any scalp condition. It prevents hair loss, heals split ends, promotes hair growth, and helps to unclog follicles.

→Why Aloe Vera Gel?

Aloe soothes your scalp and regenerates the hair cells, it is known to stop hair loss and help your hair grow thicker and more healthy.

→Why Coconut oil?

Coconut oil is naturally conditioning and nourishing to our hair. It's amazing at repairing damage, locking in moisture and sealing split ends. It improves blood circulation, hair cuticles and scalp health making it very beneficial for helping thicken up your hair. Coconut oil is high in vitamins and fatty acids, helping to protect the strands from breakage while strengthening your locks in the long run.

The natural antioxidants and nutrients found in coconut oil will deliver critical resources to improve your hair's softness and luster. Coconut oil is rich in vitamin E, vitamin K and iron and effectively eliminates dandruff while boosting hair growth. - newhealthguide.org

→Why Vegetable glycerin?

Glycerin is the type of chemical compound that’s able to attract moisture from the air.

The potential problem with glycerin is that it can have a drying effect on hair if the atmosphere is too dry/cold. Glycerin will draw water into your hair from the air if it’s humid enough. However, it will draw water out of your hair if there’s little to moisture in the air. That can cause or worsen dryness issues if you’re not careful.

Still, glycerin is great for improving natural hair’s moisture content and elasticity which helps prevent breakage, especially while detangling or manipulating it when wet.

Some excerpts from- Pros & Cons of Glycerin for Natural Hair Care Products

→Why Honey?

Honey is a natural humectant, meaning it attracts and holds moisture, it’s full of beneficial antioxidants and nutrients helping to heal dry or damaged hair, to stimulate hair follicles, & to encourage new hair growth. It naturally adds shine and softens hair.

→Why Argan Oil?

Argan delivers deep hydration, helping to strengthen dry or brittle hair.

Argan oil is proven to make hair softer, silkier and shinier. It is the ideal hair conditioner, and it can even help to treat split ends and tame frizzy hair. - Argan Oil World

If you truly want natural, healthy and strong hair you should be focused on 'no poo' treatments only. Chemicals in regular shampoo strip our hair of the natural oils it needs to grow healthily. Washing with a baking soda mix is amazing for getting rid of build up and regulating pH balance. Be cautious of this though, I read an interesting article outlining the fact that it does not dilute easily. (Causing the alkaline state to be much higher than necessary - Looking into this.) Rinsing with Apple Cider Vinegar is just as beneficial for shiny, strong and healthy hair. (My sister is working on a post for us right now about no poo hair treatments) - As with all new routines, your hair may look a little different until your body gets used to 'no poo' but you (& your hair) will thank you in the long run.

Tattoo Balm - DIY All Natural Healing.

Natural Tattoo Healing Balm is extremely effective during the healing process of your new tattoo. This will help speed the healing and protect your new tattoo from any infections etc. (If you take proper care)

This balm is loaded with anti inflammatory, antibacterial and analgesic properties making it perfect for new tattoos. Calendula also has natural restorative properties which helps to build strong skin cells and heal wounds. You can even use this on your healed tattoos to keep your skin nourished and the ink bright.

As you may or may not know, I have a few tattoos... ( ;) )

[caption id="attachment_1262" align="aligncenter" width="640"]Photos: Jay Terry + PPOC, Cyprian E & My Lovely Geofferson Dean Photos: Jay Terry + PPOC, Cyprian E & My Lovely Geofferson Dean - 2011[/caption]

I have always only used vitamin e oil to speed the healing process. Once I found out about the healing powers of calendula and started using that as well, I noticed my tattoos were healing much brighter.

Tattoo Healing Balm

The following recipe is for a 50ml jar. You can calculate the amount from this base recipe if you are making a bigger batch. Basic calculations would be 1 part beeswax to one part other ingredients. (depending how soft or firm you want the balm, you can take out or add more beeswax)

 What You'll Need:

  1. Melt beeswax first. You can do this using a melting pot, double boiler or pan on the stove. (medium heat)

  2. remove from heat.

  3. While the mixture is still hot, add in coconut oil and shea butter.

  4. Next pour in vitamin e oil & calendula infused oils. Stir everything until it is combined evenly.

  5. Pour into your container & allow to cool before using.

It is recommended to keep the tattoo clean with unscented, natural soap. Keep it moist and don't let it dry out. Apply this balm regularly to clean tattoos.

Calendula, Tea Tree & Lavender Healing Oil - DIY

I recently attended the Harvest Routes festival where I was a vendor selling some of the items I make here on this site. (as well as a few new ones, I will put up shortly). To my surprise, the two top sellers were the Calendula Healing Salve & a brew of oils I make at home and use for everything but that I haven't uploaded yet.  I decided I should share this simple recipe here with you.

As we know already, I am a massive fan of the healing abilities calendula holds and we use it around our homestead for so many different things. I have added posts here on Calendula Tea - for treating wounds and skin irritations. Calendula Poultice - also amazing for treating different rashes, cuts, scrapes, eczema, hives etc & a Calendula Salve - Acne Blend. I use calendula in my Herbal Baby Bath Blend, as well as an adult version that I will add soon. We use it in our Oil Cleansing Method, and also our Oil Pulling Method. It's even in our Coffee Tired Eyes Cream, just to name a few. The list is basically endless as to what calendula can help with. I think it's my all around favourite ingredient. It's gentle enough to use on baby, and powerful enough to help heal a mountain man! ;)

This oil blend has both Tea Tree & Lavender essential oils mixed in with it, to amplify it's healing abilities. Tea Tree is a powerful anti-fungal, antibacterial, and wonderful disinfectant, helping to keep wounds or skin irritations from getting infected. Lavender is very soothing to the skin and can help reduce redness and irritation, it enhances blood circulation, helps relieve pain, works as a disinfectant and helps to eliminate nervous tension. (these two are always in our acne blends) This mix will help boost immunity to where it is applied. An all around amazing mixture of oils.

DIY healing oil

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

TOOLS:

  • A double boiler / heating pot (If you're infusing your own oil)

  • An airtight storage jar(s) for your finished product.

  • Funnel, stir stick

TO MAKE:

You can do this two ways, If you're only making one bottle for yourself, you can fill it most of the way with your base oil (Calendula infused) and add in 5-10 drops each of Lavender and Tea Tree oils. OR if you are planning a big batch for gifts or sale, you can mix everything in a big container and pour it into your single containers afterwards. In our 150 ml containers I usually put 5-10 drops of each essential oil into the container and shake it all up. Just be sure you are diluting it enough to not irritate your skin.

VOILA!

Some Of The Things This Blend Is Useful For:

  • treating wounds

  • deep cuts

  • eczema

  • acne

  • scars

  • bites and stings

  • damaged skin

  • burns

  • slow healing or infected wounds

  • bedsores

  • boils

  • wrinkles

  • sensitive skin

  • baby bum rashes

  • itchiness

  • sunburns

  • fungal infections

The list really goes on and on, if you have anything important I should add to it, please leave me a comment below!

Herbal Steam - Decongestant.

I had written a post when I started this blog, called Healing Steam – Cough, Cold, & Stuffed up Noses. This is for a similar steam with different ingredient options. I decided to make a new one with just herbs. Herbal steams can be so beneficial. This steam works wonderfully for chest congestion, coughs and stuffed up noses.

decongestant herbal steam

To Make:

2 tsp each of the following herbs:

  • A large heat safe bowl

  • Boiled water

To Use:

  • Place your herbs in a heat proof bowl and pour in enough steaming water to cover the herbs.

  • With a towel over your head to create a 'tent', hover over the bowl inhaling the steam. (be sure the steam isn't so hot that it may burn your face) I like to keep my eyes closed because the peppermint can make them water.

This brews into a beautiful dark tea. The strained water (once cooled to being warm but not hot) could probably be used for extra relief by soaking a cloth in the mixture and laying it across your chest.  I'm going to try it and I'll let you all know.

What are your favorite herbal steam blends?

Herbal Baby ~ Bedtime Bath Blend!

I love this herbal bath blend. It's similar to what I used for my son when he was a baby, only new and improved. He's now 9, and this still works like a charm for a nice calming bath blend before bed! A little chamomile tea with honey + this herbal bath = sleepy, calm child. <3 Even I enjoy bathing in this blend. (So really, it's not just for babies!)

This gentle mix is soothing to little skin. Oatmeal is great for moisturizing and nourishing skin as well as relieving dry skin issues.

I've combined Chamomile which is good for relieving skin irritations, softening skin, and helping your littles sleep soundly and peacefully through the night. Lavender which releases a subtle therapeutic aroma helping calm baby and relax them before bedtime. & Calendula which is amazing for so many healing purposes and any skin issues. (You can also see our posts Calendula Tea, Poultice + Salve for all the amazing benefits of Calendula. - I am also working on a herbal spotlight)

Herbal Baby Bedtime Bath Blend 1

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

Ingredients:

(*Buying Organic ingredients is best*)

Honestly, I never really measure out ingredients too strictly for bath blends. I'd say if you're filling a 'ready to go' mason jar with oatmeal you can add 2-4 tsp of each herb to your jar.+ 1-4 tbs of Epsom Salts + 1-4 tbs baking soda. (alternatively, you can add half and half oatmeal to salts for older kids and parents. There is a great ratio chart linked to below for detox baths) *Just a quick reminder though, if you are putting half salts in the bath, be sure to have a glass or bottle of water (or something to hydrate) near by as even though the salts are very beneficial, they can also dehydrate.

Tools:

(Amazon has all these wonderful tools if you're buying online)

TO MAKE:

Start by blending up or crushing the oats, then using a mixing bowl or your jar - add in the rest of the dry ingredients. Stir or shake well until everything is blended together. (a few drops of lavender essential oil is a great option, especially for older kids)

TO USE:

Fill an organza baggie full of your mixture adding in anywhere up to 1/3 cup of the mixture for children. MRH offers the great idea of also using the baggie as a gentle wash cloth. (I wouldn't recommend adding mixture directly to the water and using a drain screen for this particular blend as some of the oats don't dissolve and they make a bit of a slippery gloopy mess.)

Soak for 20 or so minutes, relax and let the stresses of the day sooth themselves away.

Follow up with some coconut oil as a moisturizer after they are toweled off.

<3

For those of you adding in Epsom Salts & Baking Soda:
Why Give Your Kids a Detox Bath? - from The Paleo Mama's Post How to give your kids a detox bath:

  1. To flush out toxins that have built up in our bodyTHIS is a great article on how and why we should take detox baths.

  2. To strengthen our immune system.

  3. To promote sleep and relaxation.

  4. Help muscles and nerves function properly. Great for growing kids.

  5. Helps promote concentration.

<3

Plain Oatmeal & Calendula Baths can be used to help relieve:

  • Chicken pox

  • Poison ivy, oak and sumac

  • Dry skin

  • Insect bites

  • Eczema

  • Diaper Rash

  • Itchiness

  • Windburn

  • Sunburn

  • Shingles

Here is an excerpt from Mountain Rose Herbs about using their Baby's bath herbs in your baby's bath:

The filled bag also makes a gentle washcloth for sensitive skin, or a delightful squishy toy to play with.

Epsom salt can act as a laxative if a child swallows the bath water, leading to increased bowel movements. It goes without saying but children should never be left unsupervised while in the bath, and should be monitored to prevent drinking the bath water with Epsom salts.

Stink be Gone! Natural Deodorant Spray!

This Heavy Duty Recipe for Natural Deodorant is for the SERIOUS STINKERS! ;) <3 {I was one, don't worry! You're not alone!} There is nothing more embarrassing than trying to avoid hugging friends and family because you stink! I was sick and tired of constantly having this issue!

I have been trying different all natural recipes for a few months, hoping to find something I could share with you guys, but I was struggling to find something effective enough for me personally. FINALLY, I found this original recipe for Spray Deodorant from Katie Wellness Mama & had to try it out! She's brilliant & offers so many amazing recipes. Magnesium Oil! Of course! ~ Brilliant!

Katie's recipe is based around people with a sensitivity to baking soda (so if you are - skip this recipe and head on over to hers.) After trying out this recipe I must say - It IS effective!! BUT - I need the stink sucking power of baking soda. :/ For some reason, after having my son - I STINK! My hormones must be totally crazy because I never had this problem before having children. I remember the "good ol' days" in high school where I didn't need deodorant at all, I could hit the gym, go for a long jog, all while staying fresh. This however, is no longer the case! Needless to say, in my adult years, I need a heavy duty deodorant to mask my hippie stink! ^_^ I understand that some people are sensitive to baking soda but I seem to be okay with it and so I decided to try and combine some things from some original deodorant recipes I was trying with this new and awesome one from Katie.

Even before converting to all natural products, I could only find ONE store brand that could keep my underarms smelling fresh. I needed to mimic that effect. ;) (even though I'd rather stink then use chemicals any day)

The standard recipes I was trying before were okay, but really wouldn't last long at all for me. Plus, scooping melted goop wasn't fun, and if I refrigerated it I would end up with clumps and chunks from thinking I wasn't putting enough on. "what's all over you!?" my son would often ask. I tried so many different things. Tweaked every recipe I could find, and to my disappointment, nothing was strong enough. It wouldn't even be an hour after a shower and the stink would come creeping up on me. {This is turning into a gross post! - My sincere apologies.} Needless to say, I am really enjoying this spray! No mess, no white marks on shirts, no itch, just pure power! (+ You can customize the scent to fit your preference)

Anyways.... I'll get on to the recipe:

All Natural Deodorant Spray

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • 200 ml Magnesium Oil OR fill your container with steaming hot distilled water and add in 2-3 tbs of the magnesium flakes. (Here is another post from Wellness Mama on how to make your own Magnesium Oil! as well as the benefits of it.)

  • 1 tsp Witch Hazel (optional)

  • 1-2 tsp Baking Soda

  • 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oil (Tea Tree is antibacterial & antiseptic making it great for killing bacteria. It's a little strong on it's own so I like to blend it lightly with other oils)

  • Funnel

  • Spray bottle

Essential Oil Blend I used:

  • 3 drops Tea Tree

  • 5 drops Coconut Oil

  • 5 drops Nag Champa Oil

IT SMELLS AMAZING!

To Make:

  • Fill your container with your magnesium oil OR hot distilled water and magnesium flakes. Leaving a little room at the top.

  • Using a funnel - scoop in 1-2 tsp of baking soda

  • Shake vigorously until everything is dissolved.

  • drop in your essential oil blend

  • shake some more.

You are ready to rock this! - Shake well before each use. (we know how oil and water don't mix)

After your shower spray on your under arms and allow to dry.

I must say THIS WORKS! I am stink free! I can hug freely! FINALLY! I hope this helps you too!

*NOTE* It's important to remember, if you are just starting out on your natural journey, your underarms need time to detox. You may be smelly for a while as well. ^_^ The magnesium oil will help to detoxify faster.

Katie also recommends spraying a mix of 1:1 equal parts apple cider vinegar and water before applying natural deodorant. Thank You Katie for the tip!

Here is a post from Rapid Home Remedies on Eliminating underarm odors naturally. Lots of great herbal suggestions! Here is a post from Wellness Mama on the benefits and importance of magnesium oil.

My New Favourite Way to Brush my Teeth!

I'm still working on an updated version of our original Fluoride Free Toothpaste. I really want to try out the activated charcoal method that everyone is raving about, but in the meantime, this neat little recipe has been helping me with tooth sensitivity and stains. It's giving me an overall cleaner feeling, my teeth feel smooth and my mouth feels fresh.

In a way it's similar to our Herbal Oil Pulling Method but instead of the pulling, it's brushing. Plus I added a few bonus ingredients for sensitivity and freshness.

Oil Brushing Your Teeth -

What You'll Need:

(I used a 180ml container)

  • Squeeze container of sorts

  • Funnel

To Make:

Using either Fractionated Coconut oil or melted Unrefined Coconut Oil, mix together with Calendula infused oil. Drop in Peppermint and Clove Bud Oils, stir well and using a funnel, poor into your container.

I have used this on it's own, and also switch between first putting this on my toothbrush and sprinkling some baking soda on top for extra stain pulling power.

Happy Brushing <3

What are your favorite all natural methods of brushing your teeth? I'd love for you to share with me in the comments below.

DIY Summertime Cooling Spray!

Rosewater has been used for centuries to cool the skin. (I hear it was one of Cleopatra's beauty secrets!) Mixed here with Peppermint which contains menthol, this blend is a fast and effective way to beat the summer heat! {Or even hot flashes!}

Peppermint Rosewater to cool the skin

What You'll Need:

  • A pot on the stove

  • A spray Bottle

  • Strainer or Cheesecloth

  • Funnel

To Make Your Own Rosewater

(I infused both peppermint and roses into one pot)

  • Distilled water just over the amount of the container you will be using (fill up your spray bottle 1-1/2 times and pour it into the pot) make your own rosewater

  • Rose Petals

  • Peppermint Leaves

Since I was making a small bottle (60ml) I only added about a dozen rose petals and only 5 peppermint leaves but if you are making a bigger batch you will need more of each.

  • You can toss the leaves and petals in whole or you can crush them up. I was using dried rose petals and freshly picked peppermint leaves.

  • On medium heat allow the mixture to boil, stirring occasionally.

  • I let mine steep for about 15 minutes. It will reduce a bit, this is why adding a little more water than your container needs is important.

  • I removed from heat and placed in the fridge *On A Hot Pad* to not damage the glass shelving in the fridge.

  • Once cooled, strain the mixture reserving the infused water. (I actually put a small mesh strainer over a funnel and poured directly into my spray bottle) If you're adding in peppermint oil, now is the time to do it. As well as Aloe if you're using some - Stir in a tsp of Aloe Vera and stir well until dissolved. (because I used some straight from a plant, I had a few chunkies that I had to re-strain out)

Alternatively:

(if you don't want to infuse your own water)

  • Mix Organic Rosewater 1:2 parts distilled water

  • add 5-10 drops (depending on container size) of Peppermint Oil into your spray bottle and shake vigorously.

  • Optionally add 1tsp of Aloe

Store Your Mixture In The Fridge to Keep Fresh & For Extra Soothing Benefits!

Spray yourself whenever you need some relief from the heat. <3

I recommend Mountain Rose Herbs for all of your herbal healing needs!

Make Your Own Calendula Herbal Healing Poultice

Okay, I know I've been on a massive Calendula kick lately, I cant help it! It's just useful for so many things! Hopefully soon I will have the herbal spotlight on calendula published, and then I'll move onto another herb. <3

Calendula Poultice

We went over some of the many benefits of Calendula in these posts:

The basic greatness list of what Calendula is good for treating:

  • acne

  • eczema

  • inflammations or infections in the mouth

  • lacerations

  • burns

  • wounds

  • ulcers

  • deep cuts

  • bites

  • stings

  • damaged skin

  • frostbite

  • slow healing or infected wounds

  • bedsores

  • boils

  • wrinkles

  • sensitive skin

  • baby bum rashes

and so much more.

The idea of the poultice (alongside the other methods posted below) is to draw out an infection.

I have been using herbal poultices for most of my life. I've used them for my animals in the past as well. We used to make up herbal poultices for a patient's skin issues when I was working in Home Caring. I find them highly effective.

Now that you know a bit about the benefits of making a poultice with calendula we can move onto the how. :)

To Make The Poultice:

  • Crush a tbs or two of dried Calendula Flowers. (or you can use the strained flowers from the tea infusion / compress for this)

  • Pour hot water over them but just enough to make a paste of sorts.

To Use The Poultice:

  • Put the crushed flower paste either directly on the wound or you can put a layer of cheesecloth on the skin first.

  • Cover the mixture with a bandage / cheesecloth or a towel

  • Some people use plastic wrap to keep the warmth and moisture in, but I usually just put a few strips of medical tape on the edges of the towel or cheesecloth to hold it in place.

  • Allow to sit for a few hours (if you can)

  • Remove wrap and rinse with cool water.

  • Allow to dry.

  • Follow up with Calendula Salve (optional)

COMPRESS / Method:

To make a herbal compress with Calendula, see the post Calendula Tea for instructions. The tea compress can be used alongside this poultice and followed up with the Calendula Salve. I find it most effective to use all 3 methods together. I start out with a cool compress, allowing it to soak in for at least 20 minutes, put on the poultice and leave that on for a few hours, pat dry or allow to air dry and then apply the Calendula salve. You can also bandage over the salve if needed.

Oil Pulling - Highly Effective Herbal Infused Method.

I'm sure most of you have heard of Oil Pulling. I had been doing the coconut oil method for quite some time with pretty fantastic results BUT I still had some issues with sore gums, inflammation and sensitivity. Not nearly as bad as before I started oil pulling but I needed some extra relief..

Oil Pulling

It suddenly hit me. CALENDULA! Why not try mixing some of my Calendula Infused Oil into the coconut oil for extra healing benefits. I had made up a Caledula Tea which helps speed up healing, reduces inflammation, heals infections etc. I use this tea often to heal sore throats, issues with teeth & gums & infections, so why didn't I think of this earlier?

It made perfect sense. If oil pulling has all of these oral health benefits and the Calendula Infused Tea works so well for improving oral health, wouldn't this be a powerhouse of healing?

You could even pull with the recipe for the 'Calendula Salve' as long as you didn't add in any essential oils or beeswax.

I can honestly say, I noticed a HUGE difference after just one oil pulling session with this mix! I was so excited, and after using it for only a short time now, I am noticing amazing results! Any painful gum or teeth issues have been resolved, my mouth feels overall cleaner and healthier & improving muscles in your jaw results in less teeth clenching, I find. I used to have bad lock-jaw every morning and that hasn't happened once since I started oil pulling!

I think I will use the calendula mix in between straight coconut oil pulling.

You'll have to let me know if you try this! <3

SO what is oil pulling?

  • Oil pulling or oil swishing is a folk remedy where oil is "swished" (kavala graha) or "held" (snigda gandoosha) in the mouth. - Wikipedia.

  • Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic remedy for oral health and detoxification. It involves the use of pure oils as agents for pulling harmful bacteria, fungus, and other organisms out of the mouth, teeth, gums and even throat. - Oil Pulling - The Habit That Can Transform Your Health.

What are the said benefits?

It is said to detoxify teeth & gums, remove stains from teeth and improve oral hygiene. Because bacteria and infection can enter the blood stream through the mouth, it is important to keep up your oral hygiene.
Practitioners of oil pulling claim it is capable of improving oral and systemic health, including a benefit in conditions such as headaches, migraines, diabetes mellitus, asthma, and acne, as well as whitening teeth. Its promoters claim it works by pulling out "toxins", which are known as ama in Ayurvedic medicine, and thereby reducing inflammation. - Wikipedia

Some insights from Henry Happened on OIL PULLING 101: 10 Tips for Making It Work:

  • reduced headaches, insomnia, PMS, sinus congestion

  • general detoxification benefits

  • overall increased oral health

  • reduced inflammation in the body, including reduction of arthritis symptoms

  • pain relief

  • skin problems (eczema, acne, rashes) reduced

How does it work?

Take a spoonful or two of the oil of your choice. Coconut Oil is a very popular choice because of its antibacterial, antimicrobial properties.

Swish and "pull" the oil in your mouth for 10-20 minutes. (I suggest doing this while you are busy with something else. Shower, checking emails, etc. 20 minutes seems like an eternity otherwise. I am oil pulling as I'm writing this blog post! ^_^) If your mouth gets tired, take a break or swish with less force.

NEVER swallow any of the oil - it is FULL of the toxins that it has pulled from your mouth.

Spit it into the toilet or trash. Because coconut oil solidifies, it could clog your pipes so avoid spitting it down any drains.

Rinse your mouth thoroughly with hot water, & brush your teeth. Some people recommend rinsing with hot water + baking soda as it's supposed to restore the pH balance to your mouth. You can also try out our All Natural Toothpaste. (I'm working on an updated recipe)

How often to pull?

There is no strict schedule for oil pulling. (At least not that I'm aware of.) Some people recommend a few times a day. I usually oil pull every other day, once. I have noticed a difference, so maybe doing it more often would be more beneficial but I'm not entirely certain. If any of you have experience with how often it should be done, maybe you can let me know.

Calendula Healing Salve - Acne Blend.

Never as a teen did I have acne issues but now as an adult, I do! How frustrating! You may remember my original post on acne- All natural Acne Relief cream. While this does help, I needed something a little stronger. I had made a universal healing ointment: Calendula Healing Salve, and tried it the other day on my face. (littered with acne, scars, and redness.) I was shocked with how fast I got results! With just one application my face was 90% clearer than it had been just hours before! WOW! I decided to take it one step further and combine the original acne recipe together with the calendula salve and came up with this one!

Calendula Healing Salve Acne Blend

What You'll Need:

To Make:

  • Melt Beeswax or Carnauba Wax first, if you're using some.

  • Add in and melt Coconut Oil and combine it with equal parts of  Calendula infused oil.

  • Remove from heat and add in the Tea Tree and Lavender oils.

  • Mix well and poor into your storage container or into your molds.

  • Pop into the fridge to allow it to solidify. (It will melt out of the fridge if you didn’t add beeswax.)

This mixture is nice and soft and melts well on the skin. I pop my solid lotion right out of the container, and use it as a lotion bar. This is easier than trying to scoop some out. (If you used molds be sure to keep the lotion bars in a airtight jar in the fridge.)

It’s best to keep your salve in the fridge, not only will it keep longer, the cool temperature will be extra soothing. Please see our post: Natural Preservatives for your Natural Products for some information regarding safety and shelf life.

Apply ointment several times a day to the affected area.

What Makes These Ingredients Beneficial?

Calendula is known for it’s anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and regrowth of new skin tissue abilities making it ideal for healing stubborn acne and scars.

Coconut oil has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties so it gives it an extra boost on healing. Not only does it help cleanse and heal acne, it also helps to resurface any scarring caused by acne.

Lavender oil is also antibacterial and acts as a soothing agent for pain and redness. Lavender oil is said to be useful in preventing future breakouts, and clearing up old acne scars.

Tea tree oil also has beneficial antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties, making it perfect for healing acne. It also reduces redness and swelling.

Menstrual Cramp Cream. - All Natural Relief.

If you're anything like me, menstrual cramps can be debilitating. I find it difficult to accomplish anything while being in such excruciating pain. Since I refuse to take pharmaceutical drugs, I decided I needed to do something about it. All naturally. Here's what I came up with: {UPDATED RECIPE}

Menstrual Cramp Cream DIY All Natural

What You'll Need:

Infusing your own oil with a base of Almond or Olive. With 1 tsp each of:

Because I needed the oil right away, I did a quick infusion, using heat in my melting pot. I let it steep for about a half an hour.

Allow the infusion to cool and strain out the herbs. (A strainer over a funnel works well for this.) Reserving the oil into a storage bottle. Menstrual Cramps Infused Oil HHM

Now that the Infused Oil is complete we can start making the Cream:

  • In your melting pot add 1 tsp of Beeswax or Carnauba Wax. Allow that to melt.

  • Once the two are combined, add in 4 tsp of your infused "Menstrual Cramps" oil.

  • Poor into your storage jar and refrigerate. It won't take long to harden.

TO USE:

Apply to lower back, bottom of your feet and on your stomach. You can apply a warm compress (towel) over the area for extra soothing.

Chamomile & Peppermint tea - mixed with honey is also helpful, as well as our Cayenne Salve, which also works on cramps instead of this salve. (it's also warming, which helps as well!)

<3

*Update* I ended up using the oil directly on my stomach this time around and it was wonderfully relieving. Test a small spot first to be cautious of skin reactions. I didn't have any at all, but that's not to say everyone will react the same.  --- After reading THIS is why I included thyme in this updated recipe.

Happy Healing. <3
