Make Your Own Calendula Herbal Healing Poultice

Okay, I know I've been on a massive Calendula kick lately, I cant help it! It's just useful for so many things! Hopefully soon I will have the herbal spotlight on calendula published, and then I'll move onto another herb. <3

Calendula Poultice

We went over some of the many benefits of Calendula in these posts:

The basic greatness list of what Calendula is good for treating:

  • acne

  • eczema

  • inflammations or infections in the mouth

  • lacerations

  • burns

  • wounds

  • ulcers

  • deep cuts

  • bites

  • stings

  • damaged skin

  • frostbite

  • slow healing or infected wounds

  • bedsores

  • boils

  • wrinkles

  • sensitive skin

  • baby bum rashes

and so much more.

The idea of the poultice (alongside the other methods posted below) is to draw out an infection.

I have been using herbal poultices for most of my life. I've used them for my animals in the past as well. We used to make up herbal poultices for a patient's skin issues when I was working in Home Caring. I find them highly effective.

Now that you know a bit about the benefits of making a poultice with calendula we can move onto the how. :)

To Make The Poultice:

  • Crush a tbs or two of dried Calendula Flowers. (or you can use the strained flowers from the tea infusion / compress for this)

  • Pour hot water over them but just enough to make a paste of sorts.

To Use The Poultice:

  • Put the crushed flower paste either directly on the wound or you can put a layer of cheesecloth on the skin first.

  • Cover the mixture with a bandage / cheesecloth or a towel

  • Some people use plastic wrap to keep the warmth and moisture in, but I usually just put a few strips of medical tape on the edges of the towel or cheesecloth to hold it in place.

  • Allow to sit for a few hours (if you can)

  • Remove wrap and rinse with cool water.

  • Allow to dry.

  • Follow up with Calendula Salve (optional)

COMPRESS / Method:

To make a herbal compress with Calendula, see the post Calendula Tea for instructions. The tea compress can be used alongside this poultice and followed up with the Calendula Salve. I find it most effective to use all 3 methods together. I start out with a cool compress, allowing it to soak in for at least 20 minutes, put on the poultice and leave that on for a few hours, pat dry or allow to air dry and then apply the Calendula salve. You can also bandage over the salve if needed.

Calendula Tea - For Treating Skin Irritations.

Calendula Tea for treating acne, eczema, inflammations or infections in the mouth, lacerations, cuts, burns, wounds, ulcers, boils and so much more. Please also see Calendula Salve - DIY All Natural Healing Cream for more ways to treat skin irritations.

Calendula Tea

To Make Calendula Tea:

You can either use a tea ball and allow the flowers to steep in a pot of boiling water, or you can strain the flowers out if you boil the mixture all together.

I find it easiest to boil the kettle and then pour water onto the Calendula Flowers. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes.

Saturate a towel in the tea and use as a compress to treat skin irritations, or use it (cooled but warm) to gargle for mouth infections or inflammations.

For Acne or Eczema: Use tea warm, soak a face towel in tea, wring it out and let sit on irritated skin for 10 minutes, twice a week. You can follow up with Calendula Salve or our Acne Cream.

For wounds, cuts, boils, infections, sunburn, burns, ulcers etc: Apply a warm compress with the tea. Soak a face or hand towel in warm tea mixture and apply to skin. You can follow up (after patted dry) with Calendula Healing Salve.

For infections or inflammations in the mouth or throat: Rinse mouth or gargle with warm Calendula Tea several times a day. You can follow up with Clove tooth pain relief for further healing of mouth irritations.

What do you use Calendula for?

All Natural Migraine Relief - Compress and Soak.

These all natural, compress and soak remedies are an extension of the original post Headache Relief Salve~ DIY All Natural Remedy. I've added some additional information on reliving migraine tension quickly. (Along with some all natural product options you can purchase and try)

[caption id="attachment_538" align="aligncenter" width="533"]Migraine Relief Compress and Soak Photo Credit: joannastar.deviantart.com[/caption]

Head Compress:

Add oils to a cup of water and mix well. dip the facecloths into the mixture and wring out. Lay one cloth across your forehead and one on the back of your neck. Then proceed to the hand or foot soak.

Hand or Foot Soak:

  • 5 drops of lavender oil

  • 5 drops of peppermint or ginger oil

  • sink or bowl full of hot water (test temperature, not too hot!)

For the foot soak I like to add in some Epsom Salts. This is really just an added bonus as they help to pull out toxins and impurities in your body. (Optional)

Soak hands in water for 2-5 minutes. You can also do this to your feet. I find the fastest way to relieve migraine pain is the bottom of your feet. (Rubbing the salve into the bottom of your feet works wonders)

Some Other All Natural Options:

Ginseng is also an active headache reliever.

Wood Betony - The leaves prepared as a tea which is useful for headaches and mild nervine. Mountain Rose Herbs also offers seeds to plant your own.

Increasing Garlic intake is also known to reduce frequent headaches.

Please also see the Headache Relief Salve post for additional headache relief. This is by far my favorite salve.

What do you use to relieve headache tension?

Headache Relief Salve~ DIY All Natural Remedy.

This headache relief salve is a light, aromatic mix of peppermint and lavender oils. I can  honestly say that this is the most used salve I make in my home. Everyone benefits from it. It works wonders for tension headaches, head colds, migraines and more.

Peppermint is known to relax muscles and spasms, making it ideal for releasing headache tension. Peppermint helps relieve pain and the added benefits of soothing Lavender magnifies the healing properties. Lavender acts as a mild anti-spasmodic, alleviating inflamed blood vessels causing the head pain.

The aroma is magnificent. I find this blend helpful as an aromatherapy "inhaler" also. It's light scent is relaxing, good for relieving stress, nervousness and even depression.

I've included an extension to this post. Please see migraine compress and soak for extra relief.

Headache Relief Cream

What You'll Need:

Recipe 1 (Solid Salve):

This one can be kept out of the fridge without melting. For a softer base, see Recipe 2.

Depending on your preferences, you can add a few more drops of each essential oil.

Recipe 2 (Softer Base & Simplest Recipe):

This one will liquify to an oil out of the fridge but solidify when kept cool. It will melt easily when introduced to your skin.

In my first batch I used peppermint oil I had made from Infusing my own oil. If you're going to infuse your own oil, you can use it as your base oil and leave out the coconut oil. See recipe below if you want to use your own infused oil.

Recipe 3 - if you're infusing your own oil:

*These are basic measurements. Depending on the size of container you are using to store your finished product will depend how much you need. (In tbs amounts, use 1 tbs of beeswax to 6 tbs of carrier oil)

Preparation Items You Will Need:

  • Melting Pot / Double Boiler or a pan on the stove (low heat)

  • Mixing Stick (I use a chopstick)

  • Storage Jar(s)

Preparation for Recipe 1:

  • Melt your Beeswax or Carnauba Wax first.

  • Stir in coconut oil and allow for that to melt. (low heat)

  • Reduce Heat & add in your Essential Oils. Stir well until everything is combined.

  • Remove from heat and pour into your storage container immediately. (It doesn't take long for this to harden)

Preparation for Recipe 2:

  • Melt coconut oil in your pot  (low heat)

  • Reduce Heat (or remove from heat) & add in your Essential Oils. Stir well until everything is evenly combined.

  • Remove from heat and pour into your storage container immediately. (It doesn't take long for this to harden)

Preparation for Recipe 3:

  • Melt your Beeswax or Carnauba Wax first.

  • Next, add in Infused Oil and stir ingredients together until everything is combined uniformly.

  • Reduce Heat & add in your Essential Oils.

  • Remove from heat and pour into your storage container immediately. (It doesn't take long for this to harden)

Depending on the firmness you prefer, you can add more beeswax or add more carrier oil to make a softer base. I like mine to be soft, plus I keep it in the fridge so it stays hard, but melts easily on the skin.

If you aren't happy with your finished salve, you can always melt it back down and add in more of what you need.

It's best to keep your mixture in the fridge. (At it's best if used within 3 - 6 months)

Apply to temples, base of neck, (right under hairline) the pain site (across forehead) and bottom of the feet.

*You can also use these oils in a migraine compress & hand soak.

Blister Herbal Healing - All Natural Relief.

Summertime is the biggest blister time for me, gardening, raking etc.. I decided to try something new.

I used a mixture similar to my headache relief cream as the oils have so many different properties!

This is after just ONE application! I was very pleased with the results!

What you'll need:

Depending on the container size you are storing this in will depend on how much of what you'll need. I'd say about 3 drops of both lavender and tea tree to a teaspoon of coconut oil.

  1. Melt down the coconut oil in a double boiler. (Place a jar with the oil in it in a pan part filled with water, being careful the water does not get into the oil, medium heat until liquid - coconut oil melts very fast.)

  2. Add in your Lavender and Tea Tree oils and stir well.

  3. Store in an airtight container.

  4. Apply mixture to the affected area, either in liquid form or cream form. Allow it to soak in and feel the relief!

You can store mixture in the fridge to keep from melting.

Do not burst the blister. Apply the oil right on the affected area and allow it to soak in.

These are my results after just one application! I put it on once more later that day and you can't even tell the blister was ever there! SO much better than the pain of when they burst!

I recommend Mountain Rose Herbs for all your herbal healing needs!

Infusing Your Own Oils ~ Herbal Oil Infusion.

Making your own infused oils isn't as difficult as you may think! I use so many different oils for so many different all natural remedies, I love to make (most) of my own.

Herbal Oil Infusion

A FEW THINGS YOU MAY NEED: (depending on desired preparation)

  • Your desired herbs /  flowers *Organic is best* (I like to use dried herbs to prevent bacteria from forming in oil) (You can also crush the herbs if you'd like - this sometimes helps to pull out the most from the herbs)

  • Large Storage jar with an airtight lid for infusion (I like to use Mason jars for this)

  • Smaller storage jars (or you can keep oil in the larger one)

  • Carrier oil that your herbs will infuse into (some options are Virgin Olive, Sweet Almond, Grapeseed, Hemp etc. it is best to look up the different oils to see which is good for what. Extra Virgin Olive oil is least expensive and easiest to obtain but I've put together a bit of a list HERE on choosing a carrier oil that's best suited for what you're making)

  • A fine mesh Strainer or Cheesecloth

  • Stove

  • Pan

  • Funnel

There are a few ways I do this.

Natural or Sun Infusion.

  1. Put herbs you wish to infuse in a jar that has an airtight lid. (Mason / jam jars work well for this)

  2. Fill the jar the rest of the way with your choice of oil (Or at least until the herbs are covered)

  3. Seal the jar with an airtight lid or cork.

  4. Leave the jar to brew on it's own, best in a sunny windowsill.

  5. Shake jar every few days - checking the scent / strength of the oil, straining and replacing herbs if a more powerful strength is desired. Usually allowing to brew 1-2 weeks or more.

  6. Strain using cheesecloth or a fine screen strainer & store in jar.

  7. Store in a dark cool place / in a dark bottle or depending - in the fridge.

Fast Infusion  - Double Boiler / Heating Method

BE CAREFUL & USE OVEN MITTS IF HANDLING JAR!

  1. Put herbs you wish to infuse in a jar that has an airtight lid. (Mason / jam jars work well for this)

  2. Fill the jar the rest of the way with your choice of oil (or at least until the herbs are covered)

  3. Place the jar in a pan filled a quarter of the way full of water and turn on low - medium heat. (I leave mine somewhere between low & medium and I let it infuse for an hour - 2 hours or so. (I leave the lid off) Don't boil, and don't heat the glass up too hot as the jar may burst.

  4. Stir every few minutes. Be sure not to allow the water to get into the oil.

  5. Allow to cool,

  6. Strain out herbs using cheesecloth or a very fine strainer.

  7. Store in jars, either dark coloured or store in a cool dark place or in the fridge.

I recommend Mountain Rose Herbs & Starwest Botanicals for all of your herbal healing needs!

Clove Tooth Pain Relief ~ Earthy Orajel.

Earthy Orajel.  For tooth pain, gum pain, teething babies, & loose teeth.

I know all about how disturbing tooth pain can be, so I decided to list something that I've used for ages.

Clove is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, reduces swelling & numbs pain.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • Coconut Oil - which is also anti-fungal, anti-bacterial (or your choice of carrier oil) You could also use Fractionated Coconut oil if you'd like to keep this as a liquid oil (easier to apply)

  • Clove Oil (Clove Bud oil)  Analgesic, antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiseptic, antiviral,  This oil is usually associated with dental preparations due to its analgesic properties. Clove also has a long history in Chinese medicine. - Mountain Rose Herbs

Depending on batch size you're making will depend on how much of each you will need. Choose your container, or containers you will store it in, and go from there.

Typically you will need 5 or so drops of clove oil to about 4 teaspoons of coconut oil. (or your choice of carrier oil) (also dependent on how concentrated your oil is.) I like to use Mountain Rose Herbs or dōTERRA's clove bud oil. Very little is needed to get the job done.

www.doterraeveryday.com

  • Use a double boiler (A mason jar works well for this, fill a pan half way with water and place the mason jar into the water - don't let the water get into the jar) (I use a melting pot instead)

  • Turn the heat medium / low.

  • Put your coconut oil into the jar & allow for it to melt thoroughly. Stirring occasionally.

  • Remove from heat and add clove oils

Test the mixture to make sure its not too strong. *Always test on yourself before using on children or babies & dilute further with more carrier oil.

Store in airtight container.

To use: easiest to apply precisely with a q-tip. dip into oil and apply directly to painful gums / teeth. Try to only put it in needed place as it is very
numbing.

Remember, coconut oil is solid at room temperature,  you can either use it as it is or warm it up a bit by running warm water on the container.

You can also further dilute the mixture and use it as a toothpaste for sensitive gums. You could also mix it into our Fluoride Free Toothpaste.

Or, if you don't feel like making this, you can purchase it from my shop HERE
There are 2 versions listed, one for adults, one for children.

HAPPY HEALING!

Please remember, my advice should not be replaced by your medical practitioner. I recommend Mountain Rose Herbs for all of your herbal healing needs!
