Cheap & Easy - DIY "Poop Spray" - All Natural.

That's right! I call it Poop Spray!

This quick and simple recipe for deodorizing bathroom spray is very effective & much safer than spraying around all those chemicals! :)

All Natural DIY Bathroom Spray

What You'll Need:

  • Spray Bottle (I used a 120 ml)

  • Distilled Water - Warmed

  • Baking Soda (½ a tsp) (this is optional but helps to deodorize the air)

  • 20-40 drops of your favourite Essential Oils

The Oil blend I used included Tea Tree Oil as it helps kill bacteria. I also mixed Peppermint & Wild Orange into this one. (Usually I use Tea Tree & Lavender with a little Vanilla. Mmm)

To Make:

Warm the water so the baking soda has an easier time dissolving into it. Then add in your Essential Oil mix. Cap & Shake. I know water & oil doesn't mix BUT I use this all the time & have never had a problem. Just shake it each time you use it.

Where to buy Essential Oils

American / WW Friends: I recommend Mountain Rose Herbs or Starwest Botanicals (Some oils can be shipped elsewhere BUT my Canadian friends are having some issues here)

Canadian Friends: Amazon.ca or Pure Essential Oils

You can purchase Spray Bottles HERE

DIY - All Natural - Dryer Sheets

I'll never buy dryer sheets again! This is such a better alternative! Chemical free dryer sheets for pennies!

As some of you already know, many dryer sheets contain cancer causing chemicals. This just isn't good enough for my family + my son breaks out from the chemicals in laundry soap and dryer sheets. I wanted to find a safer alternative. Here's what I came up with so far.

diy dryer sheets

What You'll Need:

  • Vinegar (Natural Fabric softener, static guard & freshener)

  • Tea Tree Oil (Naturally antibacterial)

  • Favorite Essential Oils (Whatever you'd like your clothes to smell like)

  • Airtight Storage Jar

  • Wash Cloths or rags (Old towels or t-shirts cut into squares)

I tried things a little differently and uploaded a photo file with basic instructions. I'll add them in a list as well:

  1. Cut an old towel, t-shirt, rags or cloth into squares

  2. Fill your desired container most of the way full with vinegar (I used about 1 cup)

  3. add in 5-10 drops of tea tree oil

  4. 10-20 drops of your favorite essential oil

  5. close the lid and shake the ingredients together

  6. add your cut cloths and shake some more

  7. Throw one or 2 in the dryer with your cloths.

  8. After the load is dry, toss your cloth back into the container and shake again to keep covered in mixture.

These last almost indefinitely. Until the towels fibers give away. If you're really talented, I'm sure you can sew the edges to make a seam to keep them lasting longer.  DIY all natural reusable dryer sheets

The vinegar smell may scare some of you off BUT I assure you, your clothes do not come out smelling of vinegar. Only the essential oils remain. I have my dryer's heat on the lowest setting and they still smell wonderful.

I've read over and over with similar recipes that these don't get rid of static cling but they do. Vinegar is a natural fabric softener + it keeps clothes fresh. I also pour some into the 'bleach' tray of my washer.

These may be a little 'odd' because you throw them in wet. I suppose you could hang dry them and toss them in dry but I don't mind using them this way. I may try to come up with some other ideas soon. ^_^

HAPPY LAUNDERING! <3

Citrus Peel Vinegar Spray Cleaner - DIY all natural

Citrus cleaners are so effective and versatile for cleaning so many different surfaces. I chose to use orange peels for this recipe. This would equal out to be the equivalent of your standard orange cleaner, for a fraction of the cost. + no nasty chemicals are involved so it's safe for the whole family. This is a great all purpose cleaner, the oils from the orange peels have disinfectant properties which helps to kill off bacteria around the home. It is very effective for stains and odors in carpets and laundry as well as everyday dirt and grime and doubles as a natural degreaser.

We added a post on All Purpose Vinegar Spray (with essential oils) but this mix is for the people {like me} who dislike the smell of pure vinegar. The mix of orange seems to dull it out quite a bit PLUS you can add in cinnamon sticks or vanilla beans for an extra yummy smelling spray, or you can use the orange peels alone. ( I mixed in some vanilla & it smells like orange creamsicles! :D )

Orange vinegar Cleaner DIY

What You'll Need:

  • Citrus Peels (Orange, Lemon, Lime, or Tangerine)

  • Cinnamon sticks, vanilla beans (optional)

  • Distilled White Vinegar (or alternatively you could use apple cider vinegar)

  • Distilled Water (optional)

  • Airtight Glass Jar (a recycled jam jar works great for this)

  • Fine Mesh Strainer.

  • Funnel

  • Spray Bottle

  • Essential Oils (Optional)

To Make:

  • Fill your jar with citrus peels and pour vinegar over them right to the top. (you can grate the peels for further effectiveness)

  • Seal the jar and allow to stand in a cool dark place for 2 or so weeks. (I kept this batch in the fridge) You can also shake the jar everyday to get more out of the peels. The vinegar will start to colour orange.

  • Once the standing period is over, (or when you've reached your desired consistency) strain the peels reserving the liquid. (I put the strainer right over a funnel into the spray bottle)

IMG_5163cx

  • I dilute mine equal parts: Vinegar Mixture to Water (You can keep the concentrate for more stubborn cleaning jobs)

  • If the scent isn't strong enough for you, (or you can still smell too much vinegar) you can add in a few drops of essential oil.

That's it! You're ready to start cleaning away! <3

I made a pretty big list of uses in the last cleaner's profile, (Which you can check out here) so I don't want to double up BUT this is an all around all purpose cleaner.

What are your favorite all natural cleaners to make?

Natural Spray Cleaner - DIY

Vinegar is the perfect all natural - all in one - disinfectant cleaner. It's perfect for so many surfaces and dries streak free so there is no need for a ton of different cleaners. There are no harsh chemicals to worry about for you or your family. PLUS - it's much less expensive than your typical cleaning products. Vinegar is just as effective at killing harmful bacteria and viruses as bleach.

Natural Vinegar Cleaner

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • Equal parts Distilled White Vinegar & Distilled Water

  • 10-20 drops of your favorite essential oil blend. (Tea Tree Oil has antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-fungal properties and Lemon is also antiseptic, anti-fungal, and antiviral. Both of these oils work well to disinfect.)

I recycled an old spray bottle for this project BUT you can purchase all kinds of different ones from Amazon.

WHAT THIS IS GOOD FOR:

  • All around disinfectant

  • Cleaning stained or sticky counter tops, tiles, and appliances.

  • Streak free interior or exterior windows.

  • De-stinks and kills bacteria in recycle bins, green bins and garbage cans.

  • Deodorizes stinky shoes.

  • Acts as a room / carpet / surface deodorizer.

  • Clean stains or stick on walls and floors

  • Acts as a Goo-Remover (especially with lemon oil mixed in)

  • Removes soap scum and mildew on tiles in the bathroom, shower, shower curtain, tub and sink.

  • Removes soil or stains on clothing, carpets or shoes.

  • Helps clear out musty washing machines, dishwashers or humidifiers.

  • Provides a streak free shine to mirrors, glass, chrome and stainless steel.

  • Cuts through grease on the oven or other appliances.

  • Removes mineral and lime buildups from kettles and coffee pots. (Run a mix of vinegar and water through the kettle or coffee pot to safely clean it out. Rinse thoroughly by running plain water through until there is no longer a vinegar smell. You will notice how much more fresh your next coffee / tea tastes. )

  • Removes lime and mineral buildup on shower heads and drains. (Fill a plastic bag with vinegar mix and using an elastic band, secure it to the faucet or shower head. leave on overnight.)

  • Removes old coffee stains on tea cups.

  • Removes stuck on wax.

  • Removing permanent marker accidents.

  • Disinfects cutting boards

  • As a fabric freshener / softener by adding 1/2 cup into your wash.

  • Washing off patio furniture, siding, tables etc.

  • Baseboards, crown molding etc.

  • As a mopping mixture.

AND A MILLION OTHER THINGS I'M SURE! ;)

TO USE (standard cleaning) :

Spray generously and allow to sit for a few minutes. The longer you let it soak, the easier it is to remove grime. I like to use a rough sponge for tough areas.
I let our bathroom get a little lotta scary to show you just what this cleaner can do! ^_^

Quick & Easy DIY Scented Tealight Candles.

I've always had a love for making my own candles. I used to make herbal healing candles for my friends all the time. I do still make big candles from scratch but when I'm in a rush or want a few quick scented candles around the house, - this is the fastest & easiest way to do it.

Scented Tea Light Candles - DIY

What You'll Need: candles diy

  • an old pan

  • plain ol' tealight candles in a metal container (not the plastic ones) These Beeswax ones would be the healthiest choice.

  • essential oils of choice (& a dropper)

To Make:

  • Using an old pan, heat on the stove on low heat. (*Please be careful not to burn yourself)

  • Place the candles on the pan and allow to melt. (it's easier to keep the wicks under control if you don't allow the wax to melt all the way through.) (You may need a toothpick to prop them back up)

DIY CANDLES

  • Once the wax has melted, turn off the heat and add in as many drops of your favorite essential or fragrance oils as you'd like. (I added 10 drops of Coconut & 10 drops of Nag Champa to these ones. They smell heavenly)

  • Keep an eye on the wicks while the pan is cooling. Once they begin to set you can put them in the fridge to speed the cooling process. (be sure to place them on an heat mat.)

TAH-DAH! Simple & effective scented tealight candles! <3 I will write a post about making other candles as well. <3

Quick & Effective DIY Room Deodorizing Spray!

This is by far my favorite way to quickly deodorize a room! Free of chemical components like what you would purchase at the store, plus - It's SO much cheaper! Green Fabreeze if you will, and you can decide on any scent you'd like by which essential oils you choose to use!

DIY room deodorizing spray

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • Distilled Water

  • 1-2 tbs Baking Soda

  • 1 tbs Essential Oils of Choice. (I should really put a post together about my favorite blends) I used Nag Champa & Vanilla in this one.

  • Spray Bottle ( I recycled an old one BUT You can find some pretty neat ones on Amazon.)

TO MAKE:

  • Heat or boil your water.

  • In a heat proof dish, add in baking soda. (this helps deodorize the room by pulling the stink out ^_^)

  • Poor hot water over the baking soda and stir until it's all dissolved. (if by chance there is some baking soda left at the bottom refusing to dissolve, you will have to strain it out with cheesecloth and discard. Otherwise it will clog your spray nozzle.)

  • Mix in your choice of essential oils. (I like my spray to be pretty strong so I add about a tbs but it's up to you how strong you'd like your scent to be.)

  • With a funnel, poor the mixture into your spray bottle.

*TIP* Because we're mixing oil and water, you should shake well before spraying. Mine has never separated but most of the time they do.

This works wonders for all over the house deodorizing but also works well in the bathroom for "poop spray". ^_^

Have you mixed up your own room sprays? What is your favorite recipe or blend of scents? I'd love for you to share with me in the comments below! <3

DIY Fridge Refreshers. Green Cleaning your Fridge!

We've all been there, stinky fridge syndrome. Life gets crazy, we don't always have time to keep on top of it all.

Fridge Deodorizers DIY
Start by removing all items that can be composted, and get to it!
If you're doing a deep clean on your fridge it's best to remove all items. You can shut your fridge off while you do this.

Clean with a paste of baking soda and water OR-

Clean with baking soda and lemon (or vinegar) I find it's easiest to sprinkle some baking soda around the fridge and let it sit while you prepare a spray bottle of equal parts water and either lemon juice or vinegar.

Once you spray this on the baking soda it'll start fizzing and cleaning! Scrub & then rinse with warm water.

I also like to make deodorizing fridge deodorizers / refreshers.

Deodorizing fridge refreshers are so quick and simple to make and they work fantastically.
You can always just use a box of baking soda but this way is a little more fun and in my opinion much more effective.

Mix in a bowl with a fork.
The mixture will look similar to dough or wet sand. Add to a mold or muffin tin. Now this is the annoying part, - they take a day or two to dry completely.

Alternatively you can mix equal parts baking soda and coffee grounds in an open container and place in the fridge. I usually do this with one of the deodorizer cubes in the center. No more stinky fridge! ^_^

If you make multiple refresher cubes at once, you can keep them in an airtight jar or baggy in the freezer until you are ready for them.

These also work wonderful in the pantry or under the sink to keep things fresh. They can basically be placed anywhere that needs some "de-stinking".  It's best to keep them in a small bowl or dish so if they start to crumble, they won't make a mess.

HAPPY CLEANING! <3

Simple yet Effective Bathroom Deodorizer + Freshener.

This recipe is so simple to make & works wonders. I love how it keeps our bathroom smelling fresh. PLUS, there are limitless scent options that you can try to suit your preferences.

[caption id="attachment_562" align="aligncenter" width="466"]All Natural Bathroom Deodorizer All Natural Bathroom Deodorizer[/caption]

It's easy for bathrooms to begin smelling musty or yucky. These little jars keep your bathroom smelling fresh & clean. Depending on your bathroom decor, you can find the perfect jar to fit right in. Options are endless. Amazon has a ton of amazing jars and containers to choose from.

What You Need:

  • Fill your container with Baking Soda, with some room left to shake at the top.

  • Add in your desired amounts of essential oils to scent.

  • Shake well

  • Open or vent the lid to enjoy the aroma & put the deodorizer to work!

Some Essential Oil Scent Options that I Recommend:

Vanilla Lavender:

Lavender Rose:

Fresh Odor Eliminator:

Orange Creamsicle:

Good Karma Blend:

If You're Prone to headaches from scents:

To Kill Airborne Bacteria & Viruses:

Or

Or

If your jar starts losing scent, simply cap the lid and shake, it will re-release the scent again. These should probably be replaced like the baking soda you use in your fridge, after a month or so of use.

Additional Uses:

  • CARPET DEODORIZER: Using a sifter, this recipe also works well for a carpet deodorizer. Sprinkle (or sift) mixture onto rugs or carpets, let it sit for 10 minutes and vacuum up. The baking soda helps to pull up any unpleasant smells and the essential oils help keep it smelling fresh.

  • MATTRESS DEODORIZER: Additionally, this mix also works amazing for freshening up your mattress. This works the same as the carpet deodorizing. Sift onto mattress, let sit for 10 minutes and vacuum up.

Make Your Own - All Natural ~ Aromatic Room Fresheners

Here is a great all natural way to fill your home with a luxurious aroma, whilst adding a beautiful looking touch to your decor or table's centerpiece. This method can be used to replace scented wax tarts for a fraction of the cost. So many different scent options are already waiting for you in your kitchen.

I actually use a fondu pot with a tea light underneath to enjoy these scents, ( If you don't already have one, you can probably find one pretty cheap at a local second hand shop) You can also put the mixtures in a pan and on your stove and let it simmer on low heat there or use a wax burner if the bowl is deep enough. (although I would recommend the fondu pot)

What you'll need to get started:

  • A burner of sorts (fondu pot, wax burner, tea light candles, or a pan on the stove)

  • water as the base

  • fruit, herbs, extracts or oils

There are so many scent options. I'd love to hear what you mix and match to make your favorite scents.

A few of my favorites are:

Orange Creamsicle - Yes! It smells just like an orange creamsicle!

  • Half a sliced up orange (or as much of the orange that will fit in what you're using )

  • 1tsp Vanilla Extract or a few drops of Vanilla Essential Oil

Apple Cinnamon

Chocolate Peppermint

  • Chocolate Mint Leaves

  • 1tsp of Peppermint Extract or a few drops of Peppermint Oil

Some things you could try:

  • Extracts - Peppermint, Vanilla, Almond, Coconut, Maple

  • Your favorite Essential Oils

  • Pine Needles

  • Cedar twigs

  • Bay Leaves

  • Lavender Buds

  • Star Anise

  • Cinnamon Sticks

  • Mint Leaf

  • Cloves

  • Sprigs of Rosemary

  • Eucalyptus

  • Ginger

  • Limes, Lemons, Oranges, Apples,

  • Possibly even your favorite tea bags (Chai, Earl Grey etc)

Options are pretty limitless.

Once you've chosen your scent items, fill your burner with water and add in herbs, spices, extracts or oils, light your candle and enjoy the aroma.

Once you're done burning, you can add the mixture to a jar and store in the refrigerator for up to a week or so, to be reused. These could also make a cute gift idea.

Mountain Rose Herbs has a wonderful supply of herbs and oils perfect for this project.

Have you tried this? What is your favorite mix?

DIY - All Natural {Heavy Duty} Bug Repellent Spray!

With Summer fast approaching, the bugs are swarming in! Especially where we are, by the lake. I definitely love summer, but could do without all the bug bites. I love some of the unique ideas online such as Wellness Mama's Solid Bug-Off Lotion Bars.

There are many different ways to make all natural bug repellent but I really like using some herbs rather than just oils alone. I feel that too much oil base would probably stain clothes, so I guess if you wanted to make an oil mix it would be best as just a skin lotion or even to make the lotion bars above. SO - I will make a list below of the herbs or oils that are effective at keeping bugs away and you can decide which of what you want to use. ( You may already have lots of them in your kitchen)

Play around with different scents, or throw a little of everything in. (that's what I did, using about 2 tsp of each herb, and decided to use Peppermint, Tea Tree and Citronella oil)

Once you decide which herbs you are going to use, follow the directions below.

DIRECTIONS

  • Combine all of your herbal ingredients (excluding the essential oils until later) into a pan (or preferably a crock pot) full of water and let simmer for a few hours. Stirring occasionally.

IMG_4274vThis will reduce in volume. Let it simmer until you have a nice dark base.

  • Once you have the consistency you like, remove from heat and allow to cool for a few hours. (check on temperature)

  • Strain out the herbs using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, keeping the liquid. ( I put a funnel in the top of a mason jar and rested a strainer lined in cheesecloth on the top of the funnel, using a ladle to scoop the mixture into the jar. )

  • Add in your Peppermint, Tea Tree, Citronella and any other oils you will be using from the list.

  • Stir together well, and now you can either use the mixture alone to add to spray bottles or you can dilute into spray bottles with some water. (test the consistency for any skin irritations)

There you have it, All Natural Bug Repellent Spray!

Feel free to print out and use the labels I designed using PicMonkey. (for your own personal use, not for commercial use please)

BUG_OFFBUG OFF PicMonkey Collage1

*Shake well before use & avoid contact with eyes and mouth. I sprayed this all over before taking a walk to the beach this evening and not one single bug stopped to "say hello". ;)

I recommend Mountain Rose Herbs for all of your herbal healing needs! You can purchase all ingredients needed to make this recipe through them.

They also offer an all natural Bug Out Repellent from Way Out Wax. It's Hemp Citronella. (if you don't feel like making your own.)

Infusing Your Own Oils ~ Herbal Oil Infusion.

Making your own infused oils isn't as difficult as you may think! I use so many different oils for so many different all natural remedies, I love to make (most) of my own.

Herbal Oil Infusion

A FEW THINGS YOU MAY NEED: (depending on desired preparation)

  • Your desired herbs /  flowers *Organic is best* (I like to use dried herbs to prevent bacteria from forming in oil) (You can also crush the herbs if you'd like - this sometimes helps to pull out the most from the herbs)

  • Large Storage jar with an airtight lid for infusion (I like to use Mason jars for this)

  • Smaller storage jars (or you can keep oil in the larger one)

  • Carrier oil that your herbs will infuse into (some options are Virgin Olive, Sweet Almond, Grapeseed, Hemp etc. it is best to look up the different oils to see which is good for what. Extra Virgin Olive oil is least expensive and easiest to obtain but I've put together a bit of a list HERE on choosing a carrier oil that's best suited for what you're making)

  • A fine mesh Strainer or Cheesecloth

  • Stove

  • Pan

  • Funnel

There are a few ways I do this.

Natural or Sun Infusion.

  1. Put herbs you wish to infuse in a jar that has an airtight lid. (Mason / jam jars work well for this)

  2. Fill the jar the rest of the way with your choice of oil (Or at least until the herbs are covered)

  3. Seal the jar with an airtight lid or cork.

  4. Leave the jar to brew on it's own, best in a sunny windowsill.

  5. Shake jar every few days - checking the scent / strength of the oil, straining and replacing herbs if a more powerful strength is desired. Usually allowing to brew 1-2 weeks or more.

  6. Strain using cheesecloth or a fine screen strainer & store in jar.

  7. Store in a dark cool place / in a dark bottle or depending - in the fridge.

Fast Infusion  - Double Boiler / Heating Method

BE CAREFUL & USE OVEN MITTS IF HANDLING JAR!

  1. Put herbs you wish to infuse in a jar that has an airtight lid. (Mason / jam jars work well for this)

  2. Fill the jar the rest of the way with your choice of oil (or at least until the herbs are covered)

  3. Place the jar in a pan filled a quarter of the way full of water and turn on low - medium heat. (I leave mine somewhere between low & medium and I let it infuse for an hour - 2 hours or so. (I leave the lid off) Don't boil, and don't heat the glass up too hot as the jar may burst.

  4. Stir every few minutes. Be sure not to allow the water to get into the oil.

  5. Allow to cool,

  6. Strain out herbs using cheesecloth or a very fine strainer.

  7. Store in jars, either dark coloured or store in a cool dark place or in the fridge.

I recommend Mountain Rose Herbs & Starwest Botanicals for all of your herbal healing needs!
